Hello All

My 40L Engel packed up yesterday after 6 years of use.

It sounds like the compressor kicks in for a couple of minutes, turns off and then immediately turns on again no matter what the temp setting. The fridge gets slightly cooler than ambient but wont go any lower.

Where can I take it in Cape Town to be repaired?

Thanks

Jeremy

Might be expensive tough.

I was there this weekend enquiring about replacing the metal casing
from SWAMBO's Engel that was in a rollover. The chap said we might as
well buy a new one 'cos the repair will cost just about the same
*shockhorror*

That said, that Engel is 8yrs old, has a serious dent in it from the
rollover, but works like a bomb.

My Waeco was doing similar things when I moved it into the Cruiser after I bought it.  Turned out to be a combination of undercharging alternator and insufficient thickness wiring to the back making the fridge sense that the voltage was too low for it to run.

Maybe check this out first?

also doing it on 220V - doesn’t seem to be a power issue.

That makes sense. If it were a power issue, the compressor would turn off almost as soon as it came on, due to startup current pulling down the (insufficient) supply voltage even further.

The fact that yours actually runs for a while before stopping and shortly after resuming to me indicates that it feels it hasn't properly done its job. Indicating cooling function has deteriorated. Perhaps caused by gas having leaked out, although I'm sure there could be other causes too?

Kind regards,
Francois

Could it be a thermostat problem?

Thanks for the responses.

Have been in contact with Megaworld and will take it there soon to be checked out.

They suspect either temp control unit at R300 or compressor at R3000.

Hopefully the former!

Let them make some money out of you - buy a bag! :-)
Hides the dent and you get the extra insulation.
