Good Morning,

I am making progress with the new Defender but put back the old black powder coated roof rack. It is very dull compared to all the other new goodies, is there any way of restoring the shine to powder coating ?

Regards Brendon

Brendon,
You could use any abrasive kind of polish to remove the dull layer of coating. You could also use a buff wheel with some burnishing or finishing compound.

thanks Marius, this will work on tubing that you can get too with polisher, the slats are going to be a bit more difficult, is there no magic glomail product that i can just rub on and it does it all :-)

I tried the magic stuff before but the shine disappears in no time leaving the dull dead paint again. You can use the burnishing compound by hand as well, it does not take to much elbow grease. Nice job for a young man to earn a couple of extra bucks.

When I get back from the bush I wash the 4x4 with Brasso to take out all scratches and blemishes. Thereafter I polish with a good polish. Works for me.

First I wet the 4x4 then pour the brasso onto a cloth and rub. The deeper the scratch the more I rub. When finished I rinse, dry and polish. Comes up like new which is not bad for an eleven year old Hilux.

What about spraying it with a clear lacquer, like a Glatex 8?

Brendon,

My Front Runner roofrack has chipped quite badly, especially where brackets have been bolted down. Although out of warranty about six years ago, FR offered to strip and repowdercoat the rack at cost. It might be worth calling them to see what they would charge to do the job

Not only that they POLISH them too, it seems.
Mud is my 4x4's make-up and scratches its beauty spots and character lines.

Glatex 8 is a very expensive option! When last have you priced it? Powder coating is not UV resistant. From there the dullness. You do get a UV resistant one, but I was told not in black.
