Anyone have any contact details for accommodation at Banga Nek preferably lodge type (taking the mother with), but if not camping will do.

Just for safety, I would suggest to inquire about the security there. They had some trouble not long ago in Kosi Bay Camp. Maybe someone can verify the safety issues for you here on the forum.

Been in Banga Neck last year, stayed in the community tented camp 2 min. walk to the beach.  Basic camp, very secluded and private. No security issues when we where there.

Price about R250 per tent per night. Ablution  simple and ‘rustic’, hot water with donkey, kitchen very basic so bring a braai stand.  Nothing wrong here, nice place close to nice beach.

Would this be a good alternative for Mabibi ?

Hennie,

I guess it would be a alternative, banga neck is less developed and hasn’t lost it’s atmosphere due to  tourism. I remember Mabibi from the past as being nice and quiet, now with some new and past developments it can be a  little crowded.

Some time ago we where walking on the mabibi beach alone, now you see people all the time over there  ;-) And with the 4/5 star lodge build on the dunes at mabibi it’s likely to meet 4/5 star people over there. Personally I prefer  banga neck as it is pure and reasonably unspoiled.

I realize that being alone is a personal choice, we own and run a lodge and see people all the time, when we are on a holiday we prefer being alone.

I would say that Mabibi has become a tourist place, banga neck is for the real traveler.

Kind regards,

Martijn Verbeek

Personally, I believe so.  I haven't been to the area in the last two years or so, but had been ther a lot prior to that.  I don't know exactly what the deal is with accomodation there now, but this is how it was.

- There is a tented camp just behind the dunes closest o the point.  This used to be Parks Board (Ezemvelo) run as part of the hikers trail around the lakes.  Consisted of safari tents on wooden platforms with a central kitchen area with freezer.  Typical Ezemvelo ablutions.  Hot water from a donkey as I recall.  From what I understand, the hiking trail is no longer in operation.  For a while, Ezemvelo (at their central bookings) pretended to not know anything about the camp, but if you persisted, and spoke to a person at Kosi Bay, you could book it.  For years, this was the only accomodation in the area.

- Then the "Bhanga Nek Beach Camp" opened.  The first community campsite in the area.   About 200m from the tented camp and right behind the dunes. Had decent ablutions last time I was there, although they battled to keep up with hot water when the camp was full.

- Then there opened a flurry of community campsites on top of the hill - about 1km from the beach - I recall seeing about three last time I was there.

In short, the popularity of Bhanga Nek has soared over the last 5 years.  It is not the isolated, unheard of place it was then, but it is nowhere near Mabibi (yet?).  I'm waiting for an opportunity to go back there, although since the ban on launching fishing ski's, I'll probably rather go into Moz.

The only thing Bhanga /nek does not have is the snorkelling that
Mabibi has. Mabibi has lots of reef fish on a reef with a huge variety
of differently-coloured sea weeds sheltered from the breakers. The
more confident one gets the more exposed one can choose to be. I've
often swum with turtles at Mabibi. The only place I've snorkelled at
which is better (a lot better) is PAndane/Jangamo 30km south of
Inhambane, but that's also crowded.
Pity about the crowds, & I believe the thieving in the Mabibi campsite
hasn't reduced either.
In every other way Bhanga Nek is better/more remote/ community based
so not likely to have the Kosi Bay Ezemvelo running battle with the
local population...

Hi All

I've been to Banga Nek a number of times over the past years and have
also never felt threatened. I would however advise against being there
over major public holidays. As peaceful as it is on any given day,
Christmas and NewYears day (2007 at least) the beach was turned into a
drunken orgy with locals being ferried in by the bakkie load. We had
to dodge broken bottles on the beach for the rest of the holiday...

Cheers

The camp at the head of lake Amanzimnyama, in the forest near the
Sihadla river tributary is beautiful. It's a short drive from Bhanga
Nek. Aself catering set of cottages, great for mother.
Also a community involvement.

Fair comment Dave.

However, I reckon the best snorkelling in SA (at least) is to be had at Lala
Nek. The only time I've seen better was in the marine reserve on Inhaca.
Just have to time it right to get good conditions.

Hi Des

1) Please can you send me approx coords for the snorkelling in in the
marine reserve on Inhaca? It'll save spending hours of rationed time
looking in the wrong places.

2) I had good snorkelling close in at Lala Nek. What is it like
further out? The only pity is lack of accommodation for the public at
budget prices, ie camping. Is the cottage there available via Parks
Board, Ezemvelo, is there camping there or nearby? It's always ideal
to be able to stay close enough not to have to get in the vehicle.
Rocktail Bay, south of the lodge, has small caves close in, lit by
sunlight which comes through holes eroded into the roof. +/- 27.18539
e32.80789 IIRC

Thanks a lot.
