Erika and I are considering this movement, but will start with a six month stint see how it goes. We are planing to rent out our homes, and start traveling. I'm currently investigating options here in RSA as compared to the USA. Be interesting to hear all your thoughts.

Iv got a lot of research still to do, but am interested to keep you all posted.

Bumped into a bunch once at an AKTV resort near Tzaneen while we where on our way to KNP. They call themselves "swaeltjies" (swallows) and seem to move around singly and in groups. Not sure if they have any formal  structure.

I had long chats with a couple of 'swaeltjies' earlier this year. Seems like it is an individual thing brought on by financial hardship or through a a lifestyle choice. Some camps wont allow long term camping, while others encourage this or have camps specialising in long term campers. Sounds very relaxing, but climate outside of good weather months could be a bitch....

It seems that there is no formal organisation for this, so it is very much self regulated. Very soon got to know who were the bad apples and who embraced the lifestyle in the 'proper' way. Basically the 'trailer trash' vs the 'pensioners'.

Just 3 days of checking this out before I decided it is more hardship than fun. The financially viable options also leaves you with the typical municipal or atkv type camp that I dont really enjoy.

Hi Mike

Have been using a bakkie-mate for ±19 years.

It’s a bit small compared to the kind you are prolly contemplating, but have taken it anywhere a 4x4 goes (Matroosberg top, Lesotho many times, Angola, Malawi etc) and swear by it. (Bigger RV’s don’t get stuck so easily, but when they do …..!)

Our indoor/outdoor living means we do not really miss the larger indoors of a bigger RV.

The longest trip took only 5 weeks though (Caprivi, Rhodesia), but have MANY times seen the superiority over tents (switch-off and open a beer}. (See pic- taken back in early 2000’s)

Have over the years outfitted it comfortably and prolly the first – and most successful was the DC-DC charger and solar panels coupled with the vehicle’s alternator (This after a flat battery one morning in Lesotho with a Diesel Isuzu [3-way refrigerator on ‘Battery’]). Then a decent refrigerator(Engel fridge). MANY mods followed.

For us, one of the nicer things is that it fits on a supercab or single cab and weighs only 350kg before the beer, so if we get stuck are fairly easy to recover, and use as a ‘platkar’ when the bakkie-mate is taken off and stands in a secure campsite.

A drawback of the bakkie-mate though, is being unable to get out and drive away from late-night ‘visitors’, but access through the roof has provided a way to discuss with, and dissuade them. Also the wind-resistance means our speedo stays at 100kmh or we use too much fuel, and (like any big vehicle), we have to beware of low branches.

Hi Michael

Christine and I have been travelling Southern Africa since 2013 in 3 to 11 Months trips. The 5th one will start in October.

We meet lots of South Africans “swallows” that stay camping for months or even the whole year. Most of them have sold their house but have a caravan. Most of campsites give good prices when they stay 1 to 3 months. Once we had a better price for two weeks than 5 days.  A few have a Camper and pull a small car.

Sometimes we rent a small car for a few days, when we want to visit the region. This way we don’t have to pack up our bus every time.

We have plans to travel Canada and the USA in future, be on must be aware that cost of living is much higher in this country’s than in SA.

Greetings

Emanuel

Hi Mike

A friend in the US owns an RV. Not sure what you are looking at, but from what he says they get about 3 km/l ito fuel consumption.

My gut feel tells me that there are a lot of hidden costs in such a plan, that could make it more expensive than initially anticipated.

My 2c worth.

Cheers

Ja, their is a big difference between RVing and staying in a "trailer park". RVing implies regular travel, sightseeing, etc. etc. Staying in a trailer park or camping site for a few months at a time is something else. It will drive me up the walls.

Hi Emanuel

From your map, you certainly have seen some of the best of Southern Africa.

However may I suggest the West Coast between Port Nolloth and Vanrhynsdorp along the coast (±250m max from the sea -maybe at wild-flower time), and Lesotho.

Hi Mike

We travelled the West Coast on other trips, but October/November 2016 the weather in this region was cold and very windy. We will try to go there this time. it will probably be too late for the wild flowers but we have seen them 2013.

Hi Emanuel, Good to hear from you.

You might make it, because the coastal wild flowers & ‘vygies’ bloom slightly later in the season.

PS, Don’t forget Lesotho in the summer.

Fully loaded I guess the bus is close to 4 tonnes, luckily  we never had to go on weight bridge ;-)

Yes, height is a factor.

Once away from civilisation to the South side (lovely 4x4 country) heights can get extreme. I know that one pass was well over 3000m.

And that weight!

Well Natal Midlands (Underberg etc ) are also not too bad – nice beer!

A friend has been touring the USA the RV way for many years during the summer time. One can buy some card which makes access to the national parks very cheap. From what he's been telling me, it is really nice.

Emanuel and Christine must be the most widely travelled swaeltjies in Southern Africa. And they probably know SA better than most SA's. I subscribe to their approach of doing it "properly" as in slowly and visiting the same places more than once. Thats how long lasting memories are created.

Thanks Guys for all the input received, James Im based in Randpark, Randburg.

I think it takes a lot of courage to embark on this kind of travel. But the rewards out weigh the comforts indeed. We were contemplating another trip abroad but, since we don't really know our own country its time. I believe life has much more to offer, other that making your QTH a home base continually.

Hi Michael,
We have met quite a few "tourers"  now, it seems to becoming very popular, most of them with caravans but have also met some in RV's.
Friends of ours has been touring for 18months now been through the RSA coastline and doing some inland places now.

there are many places that offer discounted prices if you stay one month or more, heard prices of +-R1500 for a month on a campsite.

as one tourer said to us... that's dirt cheap and it includes water and electricity.

some of the folk did say that they started with a smallish caravan but soon realized that if you want to tour for a while then the bigger caravans is the way to go.

I am planning to retire in 3 years time and would then love to tour for a few months.

Good luck.

Kind of in line with our plans..... Want to sell the Oryx and get a Classique (not the latest model, don't like it) but must haves include island bed, internal kitchen (so making coffee in the early morning cold and wet isn't an enduro event...), place to sit to eat/work and internal loo/shower so having to share ablutions isn't obligatory. Classique fits the bill perfectly - but - no more off-road travels, maybe the odd gravel road, but mostly on tar stuff. You'd be surprised how far that will get you though - all the way to the Serengeti if that was your pluk..., or Chobe, or Etosha...or Hwange. Park the van and drive in where you want to visit and do some game viewing.

So I worked out you could live in the Kruger Park for around R9k a month, water, electricity and TOILET PAPER included!!! Fit an air-con to the van - who cares about the electricity, it's all included, power movers, and life would be great. Just have to leave the park for the school hols when it becomes bedlam, but there's plenty nice places within a day's trip to get away from your holiday for a holiday, like Swaziland and the KZN North Coast...Ndumo, Tembe etc.

Anybody want to buy an Oryx?

My idea is not to travel permanently, but rather do long trips to do landscape photography.  Not sure yet, anything from 1 to 6 months.  That will be in a few years when I retire.  For that I cannot stick to paved roads and a proper off-road caravan is too heavy and expensive.  I did get myself a Troopy Bushcamper from Bushlore to do just that.  I am now doing short trips to change and customize it to my requirements.
I am limited in the sense that I have to break camp to drive, but that is quick.  Just need something small to keep my campsite at first come first serve campsites.

+1 for the pop up tent

I also used to leave my table and chairs in the campsite until i had the experience where i had to reclaim my table and chairs from inside my neighbour's tent :-(

Many moons ago i travelled across the US in an old van for a few months. There i used to leave my cooler box (full) and/or a note as indication that the site is occupied. Never had any issues.

Hi Chaps,

For (also) protecting a campsite, consider what I believe to be the best-kept secret in 4x4 Camping for 2 people. The Bakkie-mate which fits on to the back of a single cab, a supercab, or even a double cab (Sorta), and one just drives out from underneath when “protecting” a campsite. It’s a real ‘lock-up-&-go’

On Gumtree they are dirt-cheap and you can be choosy and get a nice one. (Contact me anytime to tell what to look for. o83 636 09oo).

However we have found that we spend most of our time without even taking the stand-legs along, and VERY seldom use them (only at home when offloaded) as we prefer to move around when travelling. So the legs stay at home now.

The Bakkie-mate goes anywhere a 4x4 goes.

Quick scan of Gumtree now shows only 1 ad in South Africa, and it's a Wanted ad? So not too sure about there "being loads of them for dirt cheap prices". (No offence and not trying to be nasty, just wanted to know what sort of price they might be....)

Hi Colin

They come and go. Sometimes there are many and sometimes (like now), few.

If interested, use the ‘alert’ facility that Gumtree offer to alert you to new listings. There are also other 2nd hand sites like OLX and even more specific ones for the vehicle industry.

Prices around R40,000.

PietV, as PeterL said, no, I take it off when not use, to free the vehicle for around-town use.

Hi Michael we are also planning this route not fulltime but for a good few months at a time. We bought a camper built on a Land Cruiser bakkie extended by 600 mm and have been making adjustments to suit our requirements over the last 2 years and almost there now. Did an 8 day trip to Gonarezhou beginning of August we had no issues (except getting up the bank on the otherside of the Limpopo - but did make it). You are welcome to come see it for ideas, we are in Honeydew 082 900 3066.

Hi Hennie, one of the group is busy with a blog of the trip, will post the link.
Briefly was an awesome trip - no amount of reading or pictures can compare to experiencing  the wild beauty of the place. Went through Kruger and Limpopo and came back via Beit Bridge - about 10 road blocks, most waved through with drive safe. Border on Zim side 30 minutes, SA 90 minutes very unprofessional and no interest. No bribes through whole trip.
Highs: the whole experience.
Lows: too short one needs a lot more time to experience all it has to offer and spend some time chilling in camp and watch all that happens around one
A bit of a low and a hassle was my rookie mistake coming out the Limpopo: second vehicle got stuck and I was directed wrong side of him into a gat which caught the longer rear overhang, I should have checked the exit first. Created some excitement and memories.
Will definitely go again but go and return through Limpopo.
The Park is now managed by Frankfurt Zoological Society and booking through office at Chipinda Pools and one can pay by CC there as well.

We stayed first night at Mabaluata need to spend more time in that area, then two days at Hlaro, Pokwe  and Chinguli.  All had special features but as said earlier, need more time at each camp and spend some chill days in camp. Hlaro and Pokwe exclusive with non smelling longdrops Chinguli communal with ablushions  and "flash" toilets very clean and hot water.

Do you think it is advisable to do the trip in a Nissan Hardbody 2x4, but skip the Limpopo?

I really want to go, but since I sold the landy I feel some of the options are limited.

Louis, yes but will limit where you can go and would be advisable to be with someone who can recover you in need. Most roads in the park don't require 4 wheel drive but often better to have it to prevent road damage, but river crossings have quite long sections of sand. Some locals  crossed one river in near Chinguli in  2x4 drive went off the track and got stuck but got themselves out whilst we had to recover a Patrol with off road trailer who also went off the tract and dug himself in.

Thanks James, I'll jot down your number. The prime nature of a trip like this, would entail largely missionary work, on the go.  Plus regular uploads onto YouTube and a blog regarding camping and our experiences. We are in the beginning stages of putting thoughts and a plan together. My wife and I are both Christians, and we're waiting to get a release to get moving. Keep you all posted as we go along.

Wow Hannes, I was not aware that Erika and I were almost the only ones planning this, after reading your link. Although we thank God from our side it's not necessarily an economic motion, but rather a plan to see what we can see, whilst in my late 40's and Erika in her mid 50's. Unfortunately we are all programmed to live and get into debt, have kids, buy that flashy car to impress people we don't like. LOL

Lets be honest, it's going to take huge balls to step out, but the quality of life will with out doubt be HARD to BEAT. It's been true there's a war between comfort and mobility, I guess sacrificing some comfort buys you FREDOM. Thanks for sharing. 73's

Can anyone else here confirm what the lowest site fees they've managed to negotiate are? I'd be staying up to 3 months at a time for work...

there are many places that offer discounted prices if you stay one month or more, heard prices of +-R1500 for a month on a campsite.

as one tourer said to us... that's dirt cheap and it includes water and electricity.

some of the folk did say that they started with a smallish caravan but soon realized that if you want to tour for a while then the bigger caravans is the way to go.

I am planning to retire in 3 years time and would then love to tour for a few months.

Good luck.

Iv got a lot of research still to do, but am interested to keep you all posted.

Hi Nick

I think ZAR 1‘500 is very low , from what I hear from long time campers it’s more like 2’500 to 3’000/month. But that is still cheap compared to the daily rates. Sometimes even two weeks is cheaper than five days. But be aware that this rates are normally not valid in high season.

Most campsites have also toilette paper in the ablutions, juts to add to the saving on electricity and water ;-)

Whatever vehicle you chose I would recommend to mount a awing, not every campsite has trees to give you shadow.

There is no 100% security on campsites too. From my experience it is mainly caravans owners that are victims. They have a lot of  there appliance in the easily accessible tents. We only leave chairs and table outside at night and never had a problem.

Nights are calm on most sites most of the time, but on weekends some guests come to have a party.

Greetings

That's impressive - thanks all. Definitely lends a certain shine to the whole idea.

Anyone one know what the cheapest is in Western Cape, out of season? I ask as the majority of my clients are there. Doesn't have to be near CT as such, as would only sometimes be on site for work.

Mountain Breeze outside Stellenbosch is quiet during the week to work from, normal prices are not bad, but sure you can organise something for a longer stay.

We stayed often on Mountain Breeze in the last five years and could see some long time campers there. Nice place whit a lot of shade under the high pine trees.

At Kuilsriver the Van Zyls aka Avatar camping is nice to, but they had some security problems last year.  Quite place next to the golf course. Majority of guest are pensioners and stay 3 months are usual for them.
