Hi all,
we're planning our route from SA around Nam, Botswana etc before heading north for home (UK).
We would like to include Kgalagadi in our itinerary but some maps seem to indicate that Mata Mata border post has restrictions. I've seen that some people have passed from SA to Nam via Mata Mata, has anyone gone the other way? Is it a fully operational border post (my vehicle is on a carnet, so we would need it stamping in/out)?
Thanks,
Ian

Ian,

We traveled with SA vehicle with SA passports from Namibia to SA through the Mata Mata border post and the Kgalagadi Gemsbokpark in Sept 2011.  You have to stay 2 nights in the park before exiting at Twee Rivieren where they do all the border formalities.
In other words the Mata Mata border post is not a fully operational border post, the Twee Rivieren post is but you can enter the transfrontier park at Mata Mata and exit at Twee Rivieren where you officially enter SA.  If this make sense.

We returned from Namibia to SA in the past and there were no restrictions apart from the rule that you have to stay in the park at least two nights before leaving through a South African or Botswana gate.

Hannes,

thanks for that, if I understand correctly, you exit Namibia at  Mata Mata but don't officially enter SA until Twee Rivieren, so if we entered AND exited at Mata Mata (ie back into Nam) then there should be no need to get our carnet stamped.... This is of interest to us as we "only" have 25 pages in our carnet and will need most of them on our homeward journey.

If anyone knows any more about this I'd greatly appreciate as much information as possible.

Thanks,

Ian
