We are on our game farm in Alldays this weekend and saw 2 different snakes on different locations.

Snake 1: is about 2,5 m long and about as thick as 500 ml Energade bottle, and moved fast. Managed to get some pictures, but bit blurry as he was moving fast.

Snake 2: is baby of about 18 cm and about 5 mm thick, grey with black head.

Can anybody identify any of these 2 snakes?

Thank you.

The small snake is a "Cape Centipede Eater". The big snake I cannot make out the markings and head properly to venture a guess.

I'm no expert, but I thought the other snake looked very much like the
one I saw in the Bontebok NP (in a tree). Believed it to be a
Boomslang. Apparently they do come in this colour variation.

Good day, the snake in question is almost certainly a Cape Cobra as they come in a huge variety of colours from juvenile to adult phase, this is also dependent on region found and some snakes differ between male/female.( this sometimes make ID very difficult)

I'm just awaiting final confirmation from a snake expert, so will have a definitive ID soon and report back.

The Cape Cobra is an extremely fast striker  with a potent neurotoxic venom so its better to keep decent distance.

included is a list that should be helpful to each and every person on the Overland list, regards Jacques.

Morning Attie, the snake in the picture you have is a Boomslang, male to be exact and the females tend to be more dull/brown, they have a highly concentrated heamotoxic venom, regards.

Thanx to everybody's response.

The snake was indeed identified as snouted cobra. And a big one.

There's also 2 guys interested in coming to remove the snake.

Once we have better and close up pics I will post it.

Regards.

Jacques,

This identification thing is obviously not my strong point. After your
response to Anita, I went on the web and looked at as many pics I
could find and I must say that I was not so sure after I made the
comparison again. The bands and spots and specific head shape had me
totally confused. Thanks for clearing up ;-)

Hi Sarien,

I totally agree with you: it is best to leave them the way they are / where they are.  And we will always attempt to do just that. But unfortunately in this case the snakes poses a danger to the farm workers and guests, as it has taken up home at one of the watering holes.  And as you know these water holes must be visited daily to ensure all still OK and to check on game movement and activity. Guest also love visiting waterholes to check for game.

We have now sighted this snake on 3 consecutive days (within 20 meters of the water), and one of these days the snake was less than 2 meters away from a farm worker who went to check the water level in the tank. Was he not vigilant, and already knew about the snake there, it could easily have turned out bad.
The farm workers also use quad bikes, which offer almost no protection.

Also this is a new watering hole that we have build in the last 2 months. So the snake must have found the new water, and decided that is a good place to stay as it offers daily supply of birds, frogs and other small animals that come to drink water.
We also suspect his hole is right next to the access road towards the water hole, which makes it more dangerous.  And the water tank is also thus between the water hole and the snake's hole. Not good. Much like coming between a hippo and the water! We had the unfortunate experience on Saturday, when we first saw it, that it actually came straight at us, enroute from the water hole, past the water tank where we were standing, to get to it's hole. Believe me, when a snake that size comes straight at you, a lot of things goes through your mind in a very short space of time!! And everything that used to be strong and fit becomes weak and jelly and disfunctional, as you realise the speed at which it travels (straigh at you!), far outweighs any speed that your useless legs is able to give you!! And I think that's about the time that your whole life starts flashing before your eyes!

Furthermore, medical help is far away (at least 30 minutes to basic help and 1h30 to hospital), so should something happen, it would most likely not have favourable outcome.

That is why we have opted for finding someone who will come and relocate the snake, in stead of kliing it. I am sure that the snake lovers who have offered to relocate the snake, will make sure it finds a good home.

Regards,
Anita

Anita, just curios why you would like to remove the snakes? Do they pose a danger to people on the farm – if not I would suggest that you leave them in their current habitat – that Cobra has grown that big without putting anybody in danger …..?  We have a small fynbos (mountain) farm in the Overberg area and at one stage the snakes “overwinter” in our mountain hut (not as big as your cobra though!) – I had to keep the cats away from them, but it is actually fantastic that one can live in harmony with these creatures. Let someone perhaps advise you on their habits so that you know how to live with them.
