We are leaving for Krugerpark on Saturday - from the Cape that is. First stop is Loxton, then Bloemhof and then Marakele for 4 nights. And then Marakele to Graskop before we enter Kruger.
Tracks4 Africa is navigating me from Marakele to Warmbad. Then N1 to Pietersburg. From there about 270 degrees back on R37 to Burgersfort, then R555 to Ohrigstad, then R36 to Pelgrimsrus and Graskop.
On my last trip in Limpopo and Lowveld, the secondary roads were not kind. Especially as I am towing an off-road waentjie.
I think I must ignore the recommended route and from Warmbad turn south to Pretoria and take N4 to the Lowveld and then take the R539 where it turns off the N4, and then about 80 or 90 dodgy kms to Graskop.
Unless anyone has a better suggestion?

Douw, the first part of the trip is the preferred route, as going through Mokopane is a PITA due to roadworks, and the R33 is not great.

The second part, I would avoid going via Ohrigstad - the mining trucks have destroyed pretty much all the surrounding roads there.

Rather go Polokwane > Tzaneen, and then R36 > R532. We drove the R36 in June 2019, and it was alright after Ohrigstad, but not too sure of the condition of the R532.

Your other option is probably best, whatever you do, avoid going through Lydenburg-Ohrigstad!

Hi Douw

At which gate are you entering Kruger?

Agree with Naks on Polokwane/Tzaneen. My in-laws farm near Ohrigstad, some roads are terrible and others are better. Ohrigstad via Strijdom tunnel to Phalaborwa is not too bad (drove it in December)

Only piece of advice I have is to avoid passing through any of the small towns on a Friday afternoon or Saturday morning.

Cheers

Jean

From Graskop we will take the shortest route to the Park, that is the gate closest to Skukuza. It will increase the driving time as the first destination is Shipandani Bird Hide. But that is fine - The destination is Krugerpark after all.

Douw,
Shipandani hide is close to Mopanie, so Phalaborwa gate would be the easiest access into the park.
Unless you are sleeping over in Graskop.

I would go with your last suggestion of the n4 and the R539 as the roads are potholed and very dangerous now.

Such a pity you're staying at Graskop.  The best route is up to Pietersburg then to Tzaneen and Phalaborwa. Enjoy the park.

I would go straight to Thabazimbi, then Bela-Bela, straight over the N1 to Marble Hall, Groblersdal, Stofberg, Lydenburg, Graskop. probably shortest and most scenic route, almost all just agricultural lands, all I do not know is the condition of the road nowadays.
