Hi

Has anyone travelled this route recently? Which is the best road to take from Mabua to MGR? Which border post?

Thanks in advance

Gustav

Gustav,

The road from Molopo to McCarthy’s along the border is a fairly good road with a few gates to open and close along the way, did this in Sept 06.

This means you have to do the 60km of thick sand highway from Mabua to about halfway to Tshabong. It take lots of time and eats fuel!

Alternative is to drive the cut line roads either to Kokotsha and down to Werda or via Goa Pan to Makopong. These have been said to be much better than the sand highway to Tshabong.

Some of them go through consession areas but should not be a problem if you are only driving through.

Cheers,

Eben.

Thanks Eben.

Are there any border post between Werda and McCarthy’s?

I notice a track running East from Mabua, which may be a shorter route.

Regards

Gustav

Gustav,

There are border posts at Makopong and Werda.  The track just north from the entrance gate is the one that ends up at Makopong. Mutch further north there is another track which ends up at Kokotsha from where you have to turn south towards Werda.  Get yourself a copy of T4A, all the info is on there!

Cheers,

Eben.

Thanks, Eben that’s very useful. Do I need a GPS to use T4A?

Yes!

Makopong 07:30 - 16:00 is the border post you are looking for.

You need a copy of Mapsource to use T4A on your PC, but if you buy a Garmin GPS the software comes with the GPS and you only need to buy the tiles you want from T4A.

Cheers,

Eben.

Following reports from friends in Zam about the flooding of the Luangwa and the trouble it has caused in Mfuwe in particular, I did a search and came up with these reports from Robin Pope Safaris:

Methinks the descriptions of road/track quality will need to be re-assessed!

I am heading out to Lusaka at the end of Feb for a short trip, so hope things have settled down by then!  Will report back.

And the knock-on effect in Moz is even worse:

Cheers,

Rob

Eben says:

Careful, the border post at Werda has been closed for some time now. Still active in the vicinity are McCarthy's Rest, Makopong, and Bray.
