I got a nice project car in the scrap yesterday, it is a standard 72 VW Beetle.

My Idea is to convert this into a little toy off-roader :-)

The first thing I want to do is fit rims and tyres, is there anybody on the forum that has experience with Beetles
what would the be the highest tire I could put on to a beetle, the fenders will need replacing so I don't mind going
for modified fenders ?

I know google is my friend but She is confusing me !

It seems that way that if I want to put bigger tyres on I must go for Baja fenders, or cut a way existing ones.

I know someone who put a beetle body onto a VW Syncro chassis – was awesome.

Hi Brendon.

My first port of call would be your local expert! ( Bloem if I am not mistaken!)

Volksieshop: 051 448 3033

Another option is to speak to Sarel @ Volkspares Jetpark: 011 397 4760

Or you can contact my "Beetlewisperer", Dirk on 012 321 4565 or 082 964 1662.

Also browse the "Aircooled" Forum!

Enjoy!

Brendon - why not consider to rather restore it to showroom condition? I think that will be much more satisfying to drive and own than to bugger up a very nice car into some bug.

I have the same sentiments about a lot of things like antique furniture but its always a bit ironic..

When we buy new cars the first thing we do is to change or add things to make it more appealing or sort some sort of know problem out (bull bars, upgraded suspensions, larger intercoolers, non standard rims and tyres etc to name just a few)
Then a few years down the line some poor sod buys the thing and want to restore it to showroom condition reversing all the "cool" and some not so cool but cost effective mods .

Life goes on in circles  :-)

This is not really a restoration piece, even date wise, if it was pre 69 then yes it would be waste hacking it up.

As mentioned previously this is vehicle I picked up for 3K and would cost to much to get to original showroom condition, it would be more feasible buying a better Bug from the beginning
and then restoring, this one is much more suited to being modified into a "Fun Bug"

It is not a power issue but rather a torque issue!

You get the kits from Volkspares to increase the cc to 2300cc! Roller bearings and all the other bits and bobs to convert the little flat 4 into a racing engine will set you back about R20k!

Done the excercise! Maybe worth on a brand new sub assembly if you can get your hands on one!

Also remember to convert the generator to an altenator! Will set you back about R3k!

Last bit of advice for today! Check out the wear on the rear hub assembly! If it is warn to much the back brakes expand to far and this will affect your brakes overall! Volkspares "import" these and it is about R3k a set! When it arrived, it was in a local manufacturer's (Springs) packaging!

Nice Anton, that is more or less my idea and the colour I will be going

here are 2 more samples, hopefully I will get it back today so that I can start with a few things. The Suspension is done and lifted, I had replaced hubs but they needed some extra work some bushes were fubar, also replaced front shocks while it was all open. Got hold of a nice second-hand roof lining but they accidentally broke the windscreen while removing :-(

Another fine example of a beetle seen at the past weekends "Cars in the Park" at Zwartkops in Pta

Not sure if you could overland in it but it sure does seem to have ample ground clearance.

Neat.

Used to see a lot of those back in Canada many years ago.

IIRC, they used mini truck chassis and drive trains, engine in front (not back)

Did you get a good look at the chassis? Any idea what it was built on?

Cheers

If I remember correctly the T3 Syncro had the same wheel base as a Beetle and has been used by a guy in Pretoria and the Cape to make a 4x4 Beetle

Did you get a good look at the chassis? Any idea what it was built on?  Unfortunately not. It was fairly crowded in both cars and people so too little time to really get to investigate cars. I just took a couple of pictures as I knew there was some interest on the forum. To take those nearly took me 5 minutes :-(

Cheers

The image posted by Anton looks like a Type 87, which is a 4WD drive made from 1942 onwards for the German Army.

I hear you.

But, there is a way to get a clear shot of something with photoshop.

Basically, you take a series of photos from one spot until you figure that every part of the scene has been exposed without people in it.

Then it gets processed and all the people get removed!

There is a similar one, only red, that was built on a Pajero Gen2 chassis with a Pajero 3.0l Petrol engine, by the guys that sell second hand Pajero Spares, I think.

Here is a link I could find on it.

http://www.wegry.co.za/forum/threads/2939-Die-mos-n-Beetle

Probably more fun orientated than overlanding, but still a unique piece of equipment.
