Okay - I know this topic has been discussed many times. And the consensus has always been. Use a VISA card and a 4 digit PIN. And I have both of those. So I tried to draw money with this card in both Maputo in Feb and Ponta do Ouro the past weekend (MCI Bank - I think). The ATM's accept the card. I go through all the steps. I even get an SMS confirming my withdrawal (local ABSA) but no money gets spit out. Upon return no transactions are reflected on my CC statement. What would be the problem ? ABSA this side just shrugs their shoulders... The card worked fine in Bots in August. It is not a daily limit problems because I also tried it with small amounts.

Hennie in the past the ATMS were only setup for 5 digit passwords. Im not sure now.... I used to add a zero before and sometimes after my password and then it would work.

I doubt its the pin - cause why did it accept the card and allowed me to perform a transaction ?

eish! :) :)

Let me try explain again.
If an "incorrect" or short pin was inserted it would only tell you only at the end of the whole process....i.e. after you have inserted how much you would like to draw, not like in SA where it would spit your card out imediatly or tell you incorrect pin.......putting in the zero would solve this. But like I said, the last time I tried this was April/May 2011 in Xai Xai so may have changed since.....

Cool - in the absence of any other worthwhile advice it is definitely worth a try.  Let me rephrase my question:

Has anyone on this forum managed to draw cash from the Ponta do Ouro (or Maputo) ATM's using an ABSA VISA Credit Card with a 4 digit PIN ?

Hennie

I am using a FNB Visa credit card with a 4 digit PIN.

I have never had a problem withdrawing cash in Mozambique. The last time was in April this year. I withdrew from Millenium Bank at Chokwe, Xai Xai and in Maputo. I have also used a Standard bank ATM in Maputo without problems.

Frank.

Maybe the problem is not with the card but with the bank?

A month ago I was in Massinga and stopped at the Petromoc for petrol.  Confirmed that they accept Visa cards and filled up.  Both their machines would not read my cards.  Both ATM's in Massinga would not read my cards for cash.

So went with a pump attendant to Maxixe, tried the FNB there no luck so called the help line and got a very helpful fellow who stayed on the line with me for an hour while we sorted it out.

Firstly, Visa had picked up me using my credit card at Chimoio Shoprite and I had not informed them of my movements so they blocked my cards.  I got my cards unblocked but still no cash.  The helpline guy is baffled for a while but suggests I keep on trying different ATM's while he consults with the other geeks.

About 39 mins later he phones me to say he thinks the older Moz ATM's do not read chip and pin cards.  Luckily the last ATM we go to in Maxixe, the Barclays one on the main road through Moz, spits out the Mets.

In Quissico at the BCM machine I get more cash no probs.

So call the helpline on your card before every trip and hopefully no probs, but no guarantee of this.

Also get plenty cash when an ATM does cooperate.  Even if the withdrawal limit on the machine is say MT8000 per transaction, you can just reenter card and pin and take out more cash immed.

Now this sounds like a plausible explanation.

Yes Hennie we have in August / September we must have made 5 withdrawals all the way from Maputo to Ise de Mozambique. FNB visa card 4 pin code.

Thanks Peter

It at least confirms that there is no 5 digit pin requirement as previously stated.

From what I'v read from Bruce, regarding an extra decimal place
inserted, being a ZERO. It makes sense to me as a Standard Bank
Client, having used my FIVE NUMBER pin on my CC, worked too, in
Mozambique.

Is it a chip card or mag strip only? If you get sms from ABSA then pin must be ok

Ask ABSA to check with Visa if there was any issue with chip data. They might have to check with bank in Mozambique. It sounds like there is a problem with chip data in auth message. It sometimes happen that transaction gets approved but transaction get dropped by end device because there is problem with chip data send back
