Morning Gents

I recently watched a video by Edward Bath (about 4 months old) where he complained that trucks going to Maputo queued for kilometers before the border post in both lanes, causing general chaos.

Can anyone here provide more info regarding the situation currently?

We will be traveling during the June holidays and I need to decide on a route. The alternative is via Swaziland, but I am not that keen on an extra border post.

Any advice/suggestions welcome.

TIA

Cheers

Jean

Good morning Jean

The trucks queue to one side of the road - I hear reports that normal visitors are in a seperate line and get processed quite quickly.  Keep an eye on the DriveMoz Facebook group if you can.

Hi Jean,

Trucks queuing there is standard and will not change. Go through Namaacha. I had clients go through there in Jan. Took them about 15 minutes and there were no touts. Alternatively go through Giriyonda in Kruger depending where you are going in Moz.

Thanks Bruce

Would Oshoek be the preferred entry border?

Also, any suggestions for overnight accommodation in Swaziland?

Thanks again.

Hi Jean

I have a electrical contractor in  Komati that I deal with all the time and he travels daily between to and from Malelane and Marloth Park.  He reports that there are no issues relating to any unrest at present. He says that the trucking traffic is relatively low on Mondays and Tuesdays.  Wednesday and Thursdays it starts to get busy but he says he can still travel relatively easily to Malelane and back.  Friday and over the weekend he says it is chaos.

For camping in Swaziland I always stayed at Hlane NR. However that has been many years ago...

Thanks Henry

We are planning to travel over a weekend so maybe Swaziland is the option.

Yes, I was last there in 2005. But it is definitely a consideration.

In 2012 we camped in Mubuluzi Private Game Reserve, close to Hlane. Was good. They still seem to be operating, mubuluzi.com

Yes, at Komatipoort normal vehicles are a separate line, but you can still stand in a queue for an hour or two.

We avoid Komatipoort whenever possible. Currently in Bilene, came through Namaacha BP from Eswatini yesterday. Stayed at Hlane in a house at Ndlovu camp this time, but we usually camp at Mbuluzi. Wonderful camp site

Hi Jean,
I live in Marloth Park, the trucks queue to the left and leave space for normal cars.
At the border post the trucks use a separate gate to normal car traffic.
The truck queue gets long when there is load shedding during stage 6 we have seen the queue go past Hectorspruit,  but for the past two months the queue has been very short.
On Monday mornings there is hardly no queue at all.
Since June 2023 the border post is open 24x7 so no need to use a runner like in the past.
Early in the mornings it's quick to ho through, we have been through it twice this year on a Monday morning and it took us about 15mins for both sides.
On the return to SA there is a pensioners window at the SA side on the very far right that we always go to and we skip the queue if there is one, you might have to ask for it as it is not marked.
Sad to say but the SA side is always a bit slower than the Moz side.
In the past 18 months we have been to Moz 6 times, we have not been stopped once by the Moz police, we think the MP registration and the DriveMoz stickers helps, but have heard the the GP numbered vehicles could be targeted.
Hope this helps.

My vote would be to enter Eswatini at  Bulembu, camp at Hlane and out at
Namaacha.

Barberton / Bulembu / Piggs Peak all very scenic and will get you into
that holiday mode. Slower than other routes but Gauteng-Hlane quite
doable in a day.

Bulembu BP is tiny and and no trucks.

Leaning towards this option, it sounds like a less stressful option.
