Hi all,

Your advice would be appreciated. You can see a route on Google Earth that you have plotted on Mapsource but is there any way you can do visa versa i.e import Waypoints created on Google Earth into Mapsource.

Then how does one cancel out automatic routing if you want to plot a route from A to B your way.

Many thanks,
Dave

Try joining the T4A forum, but maybe your questions (like mine would also be) are too "beginner".
So I'll be watching this thread.

Not that I know of :(

On Mapsource : go Edit->Preferences->Routing->Use Direct Routes->OK

Hope this helps.
God bless,
Theo

Create your points in GE.  Also create a Path in GE.  Do this all in the same tree structure.

In GE, save all this as a .kml file.

Use GPS Babel to transform the .kml file into a Mapsoruce .gdb file.

Open in Mapsource. Voila!

In the Edit > Preferences > Routing tab, change routing from Autorouting to the Direct setting.  Then using the routing tool, click away along your route.

Cr@p method.

That will draw straight lines.

Rather this.

Start point, and end point.

Then, change to ‘select’ tool (arrow) and click someplace on route – it changes to a straight line bent at your point, drag point to where you want to actually travel via, click. Repeat until route is the way you want it.

Tada.

Hi Dave,

There are two easy ways of creating routes from GE items that I know of:

1.a. Create placemarks in GE and save to .kml
1.b. Open .kml in http://www.gpsbabel.com and:
1.b.i. set output file format to Garmin MapSource gdb
1.b.ii. make sure Waypoints is checked
1.b.iii. Click Filter and in the dialog check Transform, then select Waypoints -> Routes
1.c. Click OK and click let's go

or, if you prefer to work with paths:

2.a. Create paths in GE and save to .kml
2.b. Open .kml in http://www.gpsbabel.com and:
2.b.i. set output file format to Garmin MapSource gdb
2.b.ii. make sure Tracks is checked
2.b.iii. Click Filter and in the dialog check Transform, then select Tracks -> Routes
2.c. Click OK and click let's go

Examples attached.

As far as MapSource and your GPS are concerned, those routes have now already been calculated. You can now just activate and follow such routes without needing to concern yourself with auto-routing vs. direct/off-road routing. If your GPSr has an on/off setting for "lock on road", it may be a good idea to turn that off to minimise any confusion.

Kind regards,
Francois

Hi Francois,

Thanks for the feedback, it looks straight forward. Question though: what do I use in gpsbabel to open the .kml file. When I open gpsbabel all as I see is a list of links or am I missing something?

Regards,
Dave

Hi Dave,

I meant to go that site for downloading and installing the gpsbabel program, which you use for performing the conversion from .kml to .gdb. I guess I should have been more explicit about that :-).

Kind regards,
Francois

Hi Francois,

Problem solved, I was on the wrong website. It is www.gpsbabel.org and not .com as you gave it. No sweat!

Thanks,
Dave
