Hi gents,

Does anybody know what the border procedure is at the Lesotho border posts?

Previously they had know problems with taking alcohol across the border
but the last few times they have been asking specifically about alcohol!

Is there a quota to what you may take like in Lesotho or is it just nothing?

Was questioned at the Sani border post and told specifically that nothing
was allowed - vehicle was also searched. Never asked or searched at Buthe
Buthe.

The cynic in me suspects the Sani issue has something to do with the
proprietors of the Sani Top lodge protecting their market.

I went through Caledonspoort into Lesotho in Nov 13 and was told I can
take through "a bottle of whisky" for what that meant. I nearly had all
my beers and hard tack confiscated, but I pleaded innocence had a long
nice chat with the official, before he gave me a warning and let me
through with everything intact ;-)

Regards/Groete,
Attie

I would not mind if they had decent stores where these provisions could
be bought. Stores in the south are hard to find.

Cheers

The rule is no alcohol. Enforcement is a hit and miss thing. On average my car's been searched on one in 5 crossings at Caledonspoort (Fouriesburg), more frequently on long weekends than on normal weekends.

They're normally most strick on beer - suspect this is to protect Maluti breweries.

I normally have a clearly visible cooler box/fridge with no alcohol in. If they ask to search the vehicle I take them straight to the cooler box/ fridge. They seldom look further.

Cheers
Paul
