Morning Gents

The Prado (2011, D4D) is almost due for its 150kkm service. This is a R12k job, of which R5 is the replacement of thew fuel pump and filter.

IIR the Fortuner (also D4D) never had the fuel filter replaced and when I sold it it had 250kkm on the clock.

Is there any mechanically sound reason to replace it, or can I tell the dealer to skip that bit?

Please bear in mind that I am not very mechanically minded, so with these kind of things I tend to err on the side of caution.

Thanks in advance

Cheers

It sounds like your inquiry is more about the replacement of the pump than the filter ?

Hi Hennie

Yes, on the the list of parts to be replaced it is stated as "fuel pump w/filter" so I assume the pump will be the expensive bit.

Made an error on my statement re the Fortuner. I replaced the filter a few times, but never the pump.

Regards,

Jean

What I would do is see if you can find the part number off the existing pump. Google it and find the site with the best price for it. It is often a generic Bosch part no. Source the part from the site with the best deal and carry it as a spare. I can see no reason why the pump has to be replaced. Make sure you check the Youtube instructions on how to replace it if you get stuck. It is not a difficult job - the pump is just typically very inaccessible.

Also shop around at different Toyota dealerships. I found Midrand almost 30% cheaper on average compared to the dealership next to Northgate.

What about the water pump?  At what milage do these generally warrant a replacement for preventative maintenance?  Yes how long piece of string, but these pumps do start leaking and so crucial to well being of any engine.  Toyota 2RZ Condor petrol engine is in 300k

Thanks gents

I checked the part number and it seems it is described as a "fuel pump in fuel tank".

Is it possible that is the pump that sends the fuel to the engine and not the pump that builds pressure in the engine? IIRC the Tdi Defenders had two pumps, which then got integrated in the TD5 models.

Jean,
Yes, that's what I also thought when you mentioned diesel pump and filter and not diesel pump and injectors.
The injector pump will be a lot more.

No wonder a Toyota break down is supposed to be a rare event, they get replaced piece by piece during services :-)

BTW, that "pump with filter" is probably the tank mounted lift pump with its gauze inlet strainer as a unit, and does not include the "normal" filter in the line after the pump.
