Any comments on the Mitsubishi Outlander, as a mom's taxi and general
run-around?

Has 2.4l petrol motor, with a weird constant velocity auto gearbox. Also
has 4 wheel drive, plus diff lock (Apparently).

All the bells and whistles, elec seats, seat warmers etc.......nice
sound system blah blah blah

Comments?

Jacque

This thing is R250k, full house. How much can the Forrester like to be?

The model has about 3months left of it's life, then the new shape comes out. They will be willing to negotiate if you are not too picky on colour...
un negotiated price is from 250 as well. not sure the exact spec, bu tit is a 2.5L Normally aspirated motor.
Also have a couple of Demo's on the floor...

Speaking as a Pajero & Landcruiser owner I must say that I have been
very impressed by the service levels & attention to detail by Mitsi -
I have had the outback on loan when my Pajero has been in for service
& I have found it a very enjoyable ride - I think that to-day its not
really a question of what make you buy but rather who is going to
service it & where are they located - one reason I bought a
landcruiser is that far away Toyota & LR parts & service are
available. Mitsi for near major towns is also fine with lots of
choices, far away is another story,

just my 2c worth - Paul

I will never buy another Mitsush.ty product again.

I bought a brand new Colt Double cab from them and it was in the workshop
more than I actually had it in the first month. When I insisted on a
replacement vehicle with the regional factory rep. (from Mercedes I seem to
recall) they offered me a replacement at 40k more (for the same model) than
I had originally paid, with a take it or leave it attitude. I then picked
up my peace of k*k from Mitsibushi East Rand Mall after they had attempted
to fix it again and then dropped it off with my Stannic bank manager saying
"I will not be paying for this" and explained to him all the problems. I
never heard another thing and I still dont know what happened to that
vehicle.

That was 6 years ago.

I would go for the Subaru.

I don't know but Im sure you can work it out. I had paid around R170k for
it then and I made two payments. Since then I have had two vehicles
financed by Stannic so I don't think its a problem...

....besides I'm to scared to ask them now..... :)

I have been converted to Mitshubishi's following friends experiences
in terms of total cost of running.

I have not met an unhappy Pajero/ IO / owner. Overall they run well
and give you value for your money. I now own 2 mitshi's and find
servicing and part reasonably priced. My second Mitshubishi is a
Delica 4x4 MPV which cruises the beach like a dream

If you go for the Subaru you are going to pay on fuel bills thats for
sure and this defeats the object !!

look, the Turbo's are thursty. I had a NA forrester for two weeks. Gave me a consistant 11km/l...
Compared to my car that iss very light. No idea what the Outlanders do ito fuel consumption.

I would also go for a Scoobie. They are generally not stolen very much
(possible exception is the Impreza WRX that all the boy racers want)

But beware, they have quite bad resale value. And parts can be expensive.

Personally, I would look for a 1 or 2 year-old Forrester. Great ground
clearance and the right one goes like stink!

2.5XT Forester is brilliant. No low ratio, but plenty of torque. Will out accelerate any 4x4 except Porsche Cayenne. Good value!

I have found Mitsu's reliability and service excellent -
notwithstanding at least one bad experience that's clearly been had by
a member of this forum. I also think the Scoobie is an excellent
vehicle but both the parts prices and resale value arguments are
unfortunately all too true. You can mitigate against the resale value
problem by buying a used example but it exposes you to the parts price
problem a bit more.

I don't think either can be described as a bad choice though - test
drive them, it's the only way to figure out what you want.

His issue was not with Mitsubishi, but actually M-Benz.

Gregg if I may correct you, my issue was with the product quality and then
with the backup service I recieved from Merc who sold me the vehicle.

After having said all of that, I must say I was impressed with the two
Colts that travelled with me in December, although one cooked its head (I
think drivers era to be honest - R40 something K repair bill) and a fully
loaded new Pajero I watched getting out of a sticky situation without to
much hassel.

Just to throw a spanner in the works, have you looked at the Nissan X
Trail?

Also remember that every manufacture had dud vehicles ... it is more on
how they handle the problem.

My dad worked for Toyota for 19 years and for a period we used to get a
new Corolla 1.3 GL every year, remember the last of the rear wheel drives
:-) You will be surprised is the differences of the smae models ... there
was one that I refused to drive because it was so unstable on the road!

Back to the Colts ... previously the Colts were done though Merc and from
what I remember the motor was from a different supplier/factory than the
Pajeros (this the problem below).
As to to colt that overheated ...
There was issues with some of the colts (2800 diesels) that had problems
with over heating ... if I remember correctly it had something to do with
the size of the ports in the cooling system. It was fine for the models
before and after the problem models. This was when Merc had the license
to sell the colts .. sorry I cannot remember the years involved.

I have a colleague that is a firm supporter of the X-Trail and uses his on
the farm ... if that means anything.

I am sure someone else on the forum can correct or confirm on the issues
with the colts.
