At the venerable age of nearly 61 I joined a group for a public transport trip in Malawi. It was a great experience.

I wrote a report on that other 4x4 site and I don't think Hennie will be too upset if I attach the link here:

An evocative and insightful travel story.

Thanks I really enjoyed reading your narrative.  I was transported back to my various visits to Malawi. Tee first being in 1984 by Kombi with a bunch of Wits Uni mates.  Via the Moz Tete "gun-run".

Regarding 61 being on the old side.  Last year in July an old school friend and I hiked up the Drakensberg on a route we first did in 1976.

We left in the snow, pitched tent in the snow, packed up and came down again.  Yes in the snow.

We both turn 60 this year.  😎

The reference to 60 was, as you probably gathered, firmly tongue in cheek. I hope to reach Everest Base camp later this year. 60 is the new 40.

In 2016 I did a similar trip with Barend and two other men. The main difference was that we travelled by bus to Lilongwe. Crossing the borders was of course "time consuming". For the rest we followed your route plan. I really enjoyed eating from the street and the discussions between the four of us. The boat trip was special. I was also surprised at the number of young girls from Europe that we met who travelled on their own with bus and taxi through Africa.
During such a trip the phrase "travelling in an overloaded taxi that is racing to its next stop" takes on a hew meaning.
We felt quite safe everywhere, except that cell phones are lifted from your pocket at border posts and busy streets.

Yes Douw, your name was mentioned by Barend. I am meeting Hein Groenewald in a couple of minutes for coffee, he also travelled with Barend to Malawi a few years ago.

I am reading Paul Theroux's Dark Star Safari, an account of his journey from Cairo to Cape Town by public transport in 2000. His trip was way way more hard core than our trip, but it is interesting to note the similar experiences.
