Hi Jean,

It really depends on how well it matches up against your requirements and also against alternatives.

Some things to look out for in comparisons are maximum output rating, storage capacity, recharge cycles, and support or not for pass-through charging.

Comparing storage capacity figures in Wh is more reliable than using mAh figures. With mAh figures you have to assume the rated voltage which could be 3.7V, 5V or anything else. Recharge cycles provide a relative indication of expected service life. Pass-through charging is the ability to receive and provide charge at the same time without shortening battery life

I recently bought the Genki (https://www.takealot.com/genki-portable-power-station-500w-515wh/PLID73784682) for mother-in-law to watch her story during load-shedding. It works really well and provides enough power and capacity to run a laptop or two etc. as well. It doesn't support pass-through charging.

Hope this helps,
François

Hi Francois

Thank you for your input.

How honest are manufacturers about recharge cycles?

I'll have to delve into the detail a bit more by the looks of it.

Cheers

Jean

I have a Romoss 40,000mAh power pack that I bought specifically for my laptop. It charges my cellphone a number of times or so before requiring charging itself, but can’t keep up with my laptop, which draws power faster than the power pack can supply it.

We used this type for our Servers in the agencies.

https://www.apc.com/ch/de/search/?q=USV+BVX2200LI&submit=Search

It was expected that they should run for at least one hour. Be do not have power shedding. Not jet. :-;

They do not have USB outlets and are heavy, as the batteries are the lead typ.

Hi Jean,

Recharge cycles are mostly determined by battery cell technology (Lead-acid, Li-Ion, Li-Po etc.). So if a manufacturer quotes battery technology you can cross-reference recharge cycles. Or look it up if not provided, but that would then assume that the manufacturer's charging design respects the battery technology's characteristics.

Some degree of assumption/trust seems needed generally though, come to think of it. ;-)

Hi Jean

What are you tying to support and for how long?
A 1.2kVA inverter with a deep cycle 10-year design life 100AH VRLA (lead acid - 12VDC)) battery weighs about 35kg and will support a decoder and flat panel TV for about 2.5 hrs (all depends on power consumption)
A 2.2kVA inverter with 2 x deep cycle 10-year design life 100AH VRLA batteries (about 65kg) will support a decoder, TV, LED light and PC for about 2.5hrs.
The batteries are normally in a battery cabinet on wheels to help move them around. There's no USB ports on these units but if you need USB's you can buy a white PVC extender plug from the supermarket with USB ports.

Regards
Walter

Hi All

Thanks for the replies.

I have not given the topic much thought, it just looked like a handy thing to have around the house and camp.

We will be caping without power for a week in June, and would like to keep two laptops, a few phones and tablets charged. So that was the starting point, but then I through I might as well use it during loadshedding to keep the wifi running and maybe the TV.

Cheers

Jean

We have deployed seer of these at the homes of staff affected by LS without any other back just to keep the laptop and router going:

Very satisfied...

These are locally made and the casing looks like an adapted hard case with wheels and a handle.  Good specs too.
