Good Day,
I need to travel from Twee Rivieren/KTP to southern Joburg. My idea would be via Van Zylsrus, to the N14 at Kuruman, Vryburg, Ventersdorp, and then cross south to the N12 via Carletonville. I wonder if there are any security issues, as there are many townships around Carletonville mining town. Or would you recommend anyhow a different route?

Thanks Manfred

I drove most of the route in December. I didn’t drive the last section via Carltonville. Drove from JHB to Twee Rivieren on Christmas Eve and back to JHB on Christmas Day.

I had no issues at all except for some bad driving as is the norm now. I did notice a gang of youngsters who were clearly watching waiting for unsuspecting drivers to stop in Sannieshof.
As with everywhere be aware of your surroundings.

Bruce, did you actually drive Askham - Van Zylsrus. I have driven it March 11. It was the most horrible public road I have ever driven. It starts bad in Askham but after ca. 50 km it develops into a nightmare. Huge corrugations with thick gravel stones. Impossible for a sedan. And you cannot drive it fast to avoid the corrugations, they are too high. It cost me one tyre on the Hilux. That said it was an old one, but nevertheless. I would have turned back, but via Upington if would have been too long. I wonder, how the game/hunting farms on this route survive. No traffic all the 140 km, beside two local bakkies. They now start to rebuild the road from Van Zylsrus, but the stretch is only 4 km. From its state It should have been rebuilt years ago. And on the Askham side it is indicated as a tourist road with a billboard like "red kalahari road", or something like that. But no warnings of any kind.
