We have travelled and camped the West Coast a number of times. But the last time was about 10 years ago. Strandfontein, sand tracks north of Olifantsriver mouth and beach camping right up to the Spoegrivier were regular outings.

The first week of March we want to do a light, dusty camping trip with a cousin from Holland and her husband. We will be towing a Jurgens XCape. So we don't want to tackle serious sand or woeste 4x4 tracks. I was thinking of Tietiesbaai and Lambertsbaai. But have read about crime incidents at Tietiesbaai.

Swambo would rather go the other direction towards Agulhas, but I would like to show the cheeseheads something more remote. A dop in the bar at Elands Bay or Lamberts still has an old days ring about it.

Any advice?

One option is to book one of the southerly camps in the Namaqua Nat Park's Coastal region, as you might know the serious sand begins some distance north of the entrance. I see that National Parks have also taken charge of the campsites just south of the Groenrivier, one can reach these sites by gravel road.

Do you know of Rooiduin, the private camp north of Lamberts Bay? You can camp virtually on the beach, it is in a private nature reserve, with no access to any undesirable elements. The owner is Jannie Engelbrecht, he does not advertise and is a strict camp master. Lamberts Bay itself nowadays attracts the open car boot crowd.

Even the Elands Bay Caravan Park now has "permanent" residents and I will not stay there. The bar is still worth a visit, especially when the potato farmers come in for a dop.

We spent just over a week at Tietiesbaai in Feb last year and at no time did we have any concerns regarding security.  Whether it's true or not the municipal manager told us that the theft incidents had been a few years ago, had a bit of an insurance angle on them and then had then been exaggerated on social media.  The scenery is spectacular but unfortunately the cleanliness of the popular camping spots is not great so keep that in mind. Ablutions are also a little tired but where always clean.

As Merwe suggest the Namaqua NAtional park is a good option, the sites are pristine and views spectacular but you must be self sufficient in terms of water.
