Hi Gents

A colleague drives a Prado 150 (as do I) and was told by a tyre place that he has "flat spots" on his tyres and that the shocks need replacing. Long story short, he ended up at Supaquick where a guy (older guy with a lifetime in tyres) told him that there is nothing wrong with the vehicle or suspension, but that the 2.2 bar Toyota recommendation is too low for the vehicle and that the tyres should be run at 2.5bar.

He wasn't trying to clinch a sale either since he told my colleague that there is no point in replacing the tyres at this stage, he should continue with them until they are done.

I went to the Free State this past weekend and ran my tyres at 2.5. It felt fine until I hit the dirt and then things became a bit bouncy, but not unbearable.

Any thoughts on ignoring the recommended pressure in favour of a higher pressure?

Cheers

Jean

Jean my 10c's non-technical worth:
I think it depends on the make of tyre and the weight of each car - there should be a slight bulge on each tyre and one must determine for yourself what the 'correct' pressure is unladen and loaded up.

Toyota does not know what tyres you have on your vehicle, tyre pressures should be given by the tyre manufacturer.
On the tyre you will find the max load, max speed and the max pressure recommended for your tyre, what ever makes you happy within those limits.

2.2 for a prado sounds low, maybe good for gravel but certainly not for tar.
2.5 min but closer to 2.8 and up to 3.5 for heavily loaded, limits permitting.

When tyres are too flat it will create an oscillating bounce effect same as a spring would, that is where the flat spots come from.

A wise man (Francois) once showed me the correct way determine your tyre pressures:

Every tyre has a max load and a max pressure rating.

Load your car and weigh it on each axle.

Then work out the pressure from there.

You can then adjust as you need for different loads, etc.
