Hi All,

Swambo and I are planning our first Namibia trip for around April/May next year. Plan is to take 10 to 14 days and just explore. We will be fully self sufficient for bush camping but may take a day or two in more luxurious accommodation so I can score points! :)

Does anyone have a nice route to share with me?
Our basic idea (only by looking at the map over the weekend) is through Bots - Gobabis - Windhoek - Swartkopmund - Walvis bay then head South to (maybe) Luderitz - Richtersveld - Springbok and back to Gauteng.

Thank you,

Rgds

Hi Bruce

My impression (& I may be wrong) is that the South was mainly aimed at relieving you of your cash as quickly as possible.

Having said that I will not detract from the many worthwhile places to visit there. Only feel they are MUCH more commercialised than the parts which are further North.

Thanks Mike.

Swambo would like to experience the desert with its dunes etc and my understanding is that the desert dunes are mainly in the south or am I completely wrong?

We are not against doing the North either.

Short of doing one of the trips through the dunes from eg. Luderits to Walvis, if you want to do the dune type thing, go to Swakopmund via Windhoek and the Khoma Hochland and at least one nigh camping at eg. Bludkoppe, camp at Alte Brucke in Swakop and go play in the dunes between Swakop and Walvis, then move to Sossusvlei for the dune experience and views (camp at Sesriem in the park for the early morning access to the dunes at the vlei). From there skirt the dunes via Aus to Luderitz and visit Kolmanskoppe. From there, gooi 'n draai at Ais-Ais, and from there back to Gauteng. Forget about adding Richtersveld, it is worth a trip on its own.

Typically above trip would be 12 days / 11 nights
Jhb - Kang (1 day)
Kang - Windhoek (1 day)
Windhoek - Bludkoppe (1 day)
Bludkoppe - Swakop (2 days)
Swakop - Sossusvlei (2 days)
Sossusvlei - Luderits (2 days)
Luderits - Ais-Ais (1 day)
Ais-Ais - Upington (1 day)
Upington - Jhb (1 day)

Hi Bruce

Keep in mind that in May the nights on the Atlantic Coast will be rather cool and the mornings foggy. So better score your points in Swakopmund and Luderitz J

Bush camping in the south of Namibia will be difficult as most of the country is fenced by the farmers and not allowed in the Nature Reserves. But you will find plenty nice campsites.

If time permits make a stopover at Spitzkuppe n the way from Windhoek and Swakop.

Hi Bruce,

There is quite alot of things to see/ do in Namibia:

Duwesip (spel?) castle.

Kolmanskop

Luderitz (don’t camp is you can avoid it. The wind on Shark Island is wild... starts at 5am and blows toll 10pm)

Windhoek

Quiver tree forest

Walvis Bay

Swakopmund (awesome Tug Pub)

Lady Brandberg

Sossosvlei

Etosha

Namib Nauklift Park

Desert Horses

Desert Elephants

To name but a few. Possibly draw up your list of what you want to do and then work around there. The distances between places can be quite large.

Thank you all for the replies. I have no idea where most of the places are that have been mentioned so I will plot them on T4A and see what route works.

If you all dont mind I will then submit to the forum for approval. :)

Some really good points, esp. about camping, which reminds me of Ganab.

Being a formal Namib-Naukluft campsite it isn’t wild camping, but at least you get bush camping. No facilities other than a long-drop. Just you under your tree surrounded by open savannah, we loved it. It’s at S23.09669 E15.51270, quite a way from the main thoroughfares.

2 weeks is kind of short to see all the beauty of Namibia,  I would recommend, to enter Namibia at Divindu
Then travel to Etosha ( I planned this September 1 stay at Ngepi camp just across the border, Tree Sleeper and then in to Etosha for me that looked a nice route).
Them moove south via Khorixas, Uis, Brandberg or Spitskoppe to Swakopmund
Then to Sossusvlei , and then to Lüderitz , the Pomona/Bogenfelz tour I really liked.

lots of fun !

Great thank you Naks.

I havent looked at the detail yet but judging from the pictures (apart from the selfie :) ) that looks like more or less what we want to do.

Thanks again everyone (on list and off list) for the information. There is lots to work through.

Just do not be tempted to do too large a section of Namibia. In two weeks you can do max. one of the four quarters, SW, NW, NE or SE.

Yep, that's what we learnt while we were there.

We initially planned to do some of the coast as well as Brandberg, but once we realised how much time we needed vs available, we cut that part out and spent a few days at Waterberg Plateau park.

Noted thank you Mike. We will be planning a route where we will not be traveling every day. We were originally planning something along the lines of:

Day 1 - JHB to Kalahari Rest Camp
Day 2 - Windhoek somewhere
Day 3 - Walvis bay (or is Swartkopmund better?) for a few days. Maybe 3?
Day 7 - Hardap (?) for 2 days
Day 9 - Richtersveld for 2/3 days
Day 12 - Start heading back to JHB - Pella for the night
Day 13 - Somewhere on route to JHB - Witsands?
Day 14 - Jhb

Which is roughly 4500kms. Maybe a little too much for 14 days in Namibia?
Another option was just to visit Port Nolloth, Alexander bay go in from the South and do some of the Southern areas to include, Richtersveld, Luderitz, Kanan Guest farm etc

But having said that I am also looking at other recommendations given to me. I just need to find the time to plot all the locations onto T4A so I can understand where they all are and plan from there.

Main aim of the trip is to let swambo experience the desert. (with sand dunes) We considered doing a tour but dont really want to end up doing things according to other peoples times frames. We will also try and book as little as possible (if at all) and decide when there what and where to go.

If the main aim is to introduce SWAMBO to dunes you need to include Sesriem/Sosusvlei area and rather cut out Richtersveld, which I see as a destination on its own in any case. Remember a LOT of Namibia is nothing resembling a dune, especially around the Widhoek area. So if that is your main aim I think you need to refocus.

By the way some really nice soft expensive options in and around Sossus with Hot Air Balooning etc if you have the money to burn. Still on my personal bucket list.

Hi Bruce,

I would make my way to Swakop for at least a week.

Start of an sleep over at Kang and Windhoek (Supper at Joe's!)

From Swakop you can do the tourist thing up and down the coast.

Spitzkoppe and Brandberg is also a day trip if required.

Make your way down the C14/C19 and pop in at Sesriem, Sossusvlei and Dusewib Castle. If you realy want to, turn right again towards Luderitz. Oberlix B&B is the place to stay.

On your way back take the C13 to Rosh Pinah and veer of to the Fish River Canyon and spend a night at the Hobas Camp Site.

Nice introduction to Namibia!

Hi Bruce
If camping at Sossusvlei you must camp at the site inside the reserve. That way you can do a dawn and dusk drive. The external gates are opened too late to see the sun rise over the dunes, and close too early to see the sun set. This is of course the best time to be amongst the dunes.

Bruce,

Don't know if you received my mail on this topic, but in response to your question below:

'Which is better? Sossus oasis or Sesriem?'

Depends on your preference.  I prefer Sesriem campsite since it is already inside the national park.  Namib-Naukluft NP.  The gates for visitors staying outside the NP, that includes Sossus Oasis campsite, open an hour later in the morning.  Depending on your preferences if you want to be at Sossusvlei en Dooievlei with sunrise.  That also depend on time of year.  Best is March April.

Then when we were at Sesriem in April 2015 you could smell Sossus Oasis's drain and toilet water at the filling station.  There was a thread on 4x4Community about this and the grumpy camp manager who also manage the filling station.

The downside of Sesriem campsite is you share the same campsite with tour operators or 'cattle trucks' as I call them.  Have a look at T4A and zoom in on Sesriem camp and look at the campsites.  Try get one away from the cattle trucks.  (beeslorries)

While at Sesriem, also visit Sesriem Canyon.  From the Sesriem Canyon parking it does not look like anything, but climb down into the Sesriem Canyon.

Drive out to Elim Dunes close to Sesriem Campsite for sunset in the dunes.  Walk up the Elim dunes and look down on Sesriem campsite.

Stop at Dune 45 view point on the way to Sossusvlei.  Climb Dune 45 and watch sunset from there if you want.  Also see fairy cirlces.

Regards,

Bruce,

From Sossusvlei I would rather head south and exit at Ariamsvlei/Nakop to go back home via Witsand.

Or if you still have time for Pella either Noordoewer/Viooilsdrif or Velloorsdrif/Onseepkans border posts.
Velloorsdrif/Onseepkans  border post is 08h00-16h30.

Hi Bruce

If camping at Sossusvlei you must camp at the site inside the reserve. That way you can do a dawn and dusk drive. The external gates are opened too late to see the sun rise over the dunes, and close too early to see the sun set. This is of course the best time to be amongst the dunes.

Thank you Christo.

I actually just opened T4A and google and was looking at Sesriem and Soussevlei funny enough. I see there are two campsites in Sesriem. Which is better? Sossus oasis or Sesriem?

Also can you camp in Soussevlei or is it a day visit with permit type place?

If the main aim is to introduce SWAMBO to dunes you need to include Sesriem/Sosusvlei area and rather cut out Richtersveld, which I see as a destination on its own in any case. Remember a LOT of Namibia is nothing resembling a dune, especially around the Widhoek area. So if that is your main aim I think you need to refocus.

By the way some really nice soft expensive options in and around Sossus with Hot Air Balooning etc if you have the money to burn. Still on my personal bucket list.
