Any pointers on where we can get good meat in Rundu, Grootfontein, Tsumeb, Oshakati or  Ruacana. Up in the area for 4 weeks and prefer to buy locally.

Thanks

Peter, there is nothing good in Rundu, the meat looks like it was hacked to pieces some time ago and frozen. The Checkers in the main centre close to the hotel is probably your best choice.

In Grootfontein is a (German) butchery, but apart from good Kudu fillets nothing really appetizing.

Ruacana has nothing that I can remember. The shop in the filling station offers something for the brave.

Tsumeb Spar is the best of the lot. Awesome selction and quality. We also did okay in Grootfontein (be very careful of the vagrants when leaving your car unattended). After a very racist incident in Oshakati I won't go near the place. Rundu also has good shops but you need to explain to the butcher what cuts you want from what grade meat. Stay away from anything resembling boerewors or lamb chops.

Thanks Hennie and others.

We never leave our vehicles unattended. One of the Guys always stays with the vehicles and those shopping carry a portable VHF radio with them just in case they are needed to return in a hurry.

Learnt this lesson many years ago in Maputo after somebody tried to cut into the bags on the spare wheels.

From the top down, first decent meat we found was in Swakop.

I can highly recommend the “farm butchery” at Eldorado camp, 8km South of Anderson gate at Etosha (outside the park).  They have the best (most tender) Kudu steaks I have ever eaten, as well as Beef steaks, Gemsbok (Oryx), biltong.  Just phone in advance if you are buying in bulk.  Their camp sites are also excellent: all grass sites under trees, not crowded, excellent ablutions and the biggest hot water Donkey you will ever see!  A good place to stay if you are visiting Etosha.

African meat supplies in Oshakati also has excellent meat, and will vacuum pack for you, but you need to place your order a day in advance so that they can cut and prepare as per your requirements.   I can also recommend an excellent vehicle workshop in Oshakati if anyone needs vehicle repairs done.   I have never had any issues in Oshakati, we even spent a day walking around the town/Mall etc.

Try the butchery just down the road from Oppie-Koppie in Kamanjab - in 5 weeks they never let us down once!
Don't ask why we were in Kamanjab for 5 weeks though!

Please mDO NOT leave your vehicle unattended anywhere in Rundu - I have had problems there twice - once when I was actually sitting in the cab.
The locals confirm this.

Some time ago I bought vlakvark stewing meat (potvleis) from that German butchery in Grootfontein for R16 per kilo. The pot was divine.....

No, more to do with the thieving *********s in Rundu!!!!

But I do like Lars' great knowledge of Unimogs, he provided me with a lot of information during our "holiday" at Oppi Koppi.
