Any help regarding the correct methodology in obtaining this would be
greatly appreciated. The story so far :

In early January I went to the Licensing Authority in Cape Town to get
an application for a police cleance certificate which I then lodged
with the licensing dept before going to the police vehicle people in
Stikland to have the vehicle cleared and what I thought was a cleance
certificate issued by them( purpose for a trip to several countries up
north in May this year ) I was then in posession of a two page form
stamped by the police which also mentioned the countries that I had
requested.

Subsequently my vehicle came up for licensing and in order to get the
new disc I had to hand in the document obtained from the police. I was
then issued with the standard greenish Motor Vehicle Licenseand
License Disc ( form MVL1) from which the disc was cut and put on the
vehicle in the normal manner. However in addition to this I was given
an almost identical greenish document ( form MVLX ) called a Motor
Vehicle License ( note the missing words " and License disc " compared
to the MVL1 document. The notable difference between the two is that
there is no license disc on MVLX and in that area of the document
where the disc would appear there is instead the following:

Important Information

a certain amount of blurb which also says " Police Mark / Other
"Police Verified"

Is this the police cleance cerificate or not ? / or Was the document
from the Police in Stikland the real thing ??

The document from the police in Stikland is certainly real enough in the
eyes of the border posts where we used it in Zambia and Zimbabwe
Dec/Jan.

But the other one also sounds realer so just hang onto that in case you
need it.

Andre the document form Stikland was the real thing.....but I don't know
about the other one you have now.
You should have gone only for the clearance after you renewed your
licence...the problem is that you cannot renew licence if you do not hand in
the Police clearance certificate......

The short answer to your seemingly non-existent problem is: If it was not issued by the Police it can never be a POLICE clearance....
