I was told that the "doods akker" is no longer traversable due to that rock ledge that stopped the Voetspore team. It was said to me that the rocks now form  a permanent barrier. Looks like this may not be the case if these folks attempted the drive.

I have heard the same thing. It may just have been "4X4 Guide talk", you know like people telling you cannot/should not take this and that road in Namibia...and then it tunrs out to be beautiful to say the least...Like Hartmans valley...Anyway, have you google Google Earth? should be spottable? I have absolutely no desire to traverse that piece beach. Maybe my guts have gone the same way as some other parts of me.

No offense, Hennie, but as anyone that has lived on the coast and spent a reasonable amount of time in, and around the sea can tell you, one big storm can move a huge amount of sand and change the face of a beach completely.  When I first read that report stating that the Doodsakker route would be blocked for years to come due to the exposed rocks, my immediate thought was that the writer was comparing the beach to an inland feature where only the wind moves the sand. 

For example, out at sea, I have seen 3m high reefs out at sea in 15m of water almost completely covered by sand in one cold front, say three / four days.  Heavy wind, big waves and sea currents running parallel to the shore for a few days  can completely change the face of a beach and it's sand banks.  Conditions can remain pretty much static between storms though.

yip the dunes and particulary rocks on the beach can open and close on a weekly basis depending on tides stormes etc.  I see it in Moz all of the time.

Hennie, I have heard that the guide that went with the Voetspore team
continiously hurried them along, but they dragged their heels with all the
photography etc., and were eventually caught out.

I know someone that is going through their about now, will report on
driveability when they are back.

Ja agree, I remember whilst at varsity the oceanographers and others experts doing calcs on how long it would take to form Hobie beach in PE, after constructing a new pier.  Can’t remember the exact expectations, but it was years.  The beach was formed in months – mainly due to sand transported by the long shore current.

I spoke to Johan Badenhorst of the Voetspore team at the T4A meet. He explained that Riko Sako had warned Koos Moorcroft (the guide) that the rocks were exposed and they won't make it, but that they then decided to try it anyway. It made for good publicity and a nice adventure (which Johan explained they were after) :-)  I got the impression from Johan that relations between Koos and Voetspore were strained at that point so they pretty much dismissed his opinion. :-)

If you want a good example of how the coast can change, look at the photo of the Vanessa seafood in this series. Two years ago it was lying in the water, on the photo it is a hundred or so meters into the desert already.

I suspect high tide and low tide have a bigger influence on the different looks in the pictures. Vanessa Seafood is not gonna get up and walked a couple of hundred meters inland ;-)

Nope. The photo by me was taken at low tide, when vehicles can drive on the inter tidal zone. Vanessa stayed where she was, the coastline shifted.

Agree 100%.  I have an electronic copy somewhere, and a very tattered paperback that I found at a boot sale for R5.00 ;-)

I visited the Dunedin Star site about 10 years ago. There is no trace of the wreck, but the beach was still littered with pieces of cargo such as light bulbs and tyres, as well as one of the fuel tanks which was fastened to the deck. The mast of a very old unknown sailing ship was also still on the beach, a few hundred metres from the sea.

The Dunedin Star wreck is NW of Sesfontein (IIRC almost due West of Groendrom), in the northern part of the Skeleton Coast NP, and is off limits to all but the very lucky few who get permits to go to the north of the SCNP.  Like Kingsley Holgate for his around Africa trip (think he was the last).

Deon Kotze & Philna are on the current Koos Moorcroft trip to Congo
River Mouth and are at the moment in Lobito - Lin & I are going on
the next trip, next month, and I have been getting quite nervous about
Doodsakker ! Especially having the read the article in this months
magazine.

I had sms's from Deon over the weekend - and he told me that they were
unable to go up the beach along Doodsakker due to : Quote:- "The
Rocks Was Open" - thanks for the photo links now I know what the rocks
was opens actually means - now I am even more scared !!! Deons tour
went across the Iona park instead - so far he has a cracked water tank
and cracked spare fuel tank and a dead compressor - he says the
"roads" are %^^%$# !!

I'm a member of the Namibian geological society and we managed to organise a trip up the coast to the Kunene. There are some very interesting extinct volcanoes up there.

In short Markus, -- inland from Cape Fria is an extinct volcano called the Agate mountain carbonatite complex, a 90 million year old volcano, which in Southern African terms is very young. It is mainly the greenish horse shoe shaped structure in the middel of the attached GE photo. Being a carbonatite-type volcano, it has rare rock types associated with it, with names like fenite, alvikite, sovite and beforsite. 

But the interesting part is that it is just a satellite volcano on the edge of a much bigger volcano, with a diameter of about 100km, but which lies under the sea. The big one is a collapsed volcano, meaning that it subsided into the cavity left by the extruding lava. That is why none of it protrudes above the water.

Heard from a group that went in May this year that fishing is now
forbidden at Foz du Kunene (5000US$ fine) Story is that too many
Namibians ( who do not need a visa) came on fishing expiditions and
went home with bakkies full of fish. No idea if this is just
applicable to people traveling without an official guide.

mentioned rumours about a talks re a transfrontier park in tha area.
In any case, if some of you guys are big fishermen and intend to go

I think the main difference is that government gets in on the action when they allow trawlers,
because foz de cunene might be a little hard for the guys to get to in quick order, whereas the navy can take care of the trawlers.
Some guys do go and catch a ton of fish and pay for their trips with the proceeds.

I agree! Knew a few guys who thought that the ultimate thrill in life was to go to Henties and catch a freezer trailer full of fish. They thought i was out of my mind when I asked them why they did not practice catch and release or when I eventually told them that I thought that they were not only wasteful but also harmed the Eco system and that I prefer not mix with them and their ilk.
