Hi guys,

My Smev gas stove ignites, but does not stay lit once I release the button...I presume the thermocouple on that particular burner is gone (the other burner works fine).

Does anybody know where I can find a new thermocouple in Cape Town? Are these things standard, or do I need one particularly suited to the Smev stove?

From research it seems that Smev is now Dometic? Either way...I can't find a Dometic thermocouple either.

Any help would be appreciated.

Etienne

Etienne before sending it in for repair check that the copper wires underneath the stove aren't touching. Had exactly the same issue on my caravan once.

Most probably just dirty.  A thermo coupler is just that, thermo = heat and coupler  = valve.

How it works: It is a safety shut off valve that is heat controlled. When you hold down the igniter and valve knob the system over rides the thermocoupler to allow gas through to ignite. Once lit you are to hold in the knob for up to 10 seconds to allow the thermo coupler to heat up and open. Once opened you release the knob obviously and cook. However with use layers of water, fat, oil etc pack onto the thermocouplers and they lose the ability to heat up and open.
99% of the time this is the problem... sooooo get some degreaser / sunlight liquid etc and either goldilocks or even fine water paper and clean oft the caked on coatings of muck.

Once nice and clean all should work fine

Try Blue Flame Wholesalers in Voortrekker Avenue, Goodwood or Durbanville Gas.
I could be the Thermocouple or the “mini magnet” that has given the ghost.

Bruce,

I owe you a case of beer. That stove top is basically not removable from the counter top, with the drain pipe, and electrical connections and whatnot. I was fiddling with it this morning, and if you hadn’t given me the tip, I would have dismantled the entire thing…probably an hour or two of work, all for nothing.

I just moved the wires that were touching the stove body, and voila!

Sometimes it helps not to know what a thermocouple and all that other stuff is. :)

Glad you got it sorted. :)
