Heads up - R26 and R709 Wepener to Excelsior

Hi Gents

Just a heads up for anyone considering traveling the above stretch of road. We traveled it yesterday on the way back to Gauteng. 

The road is heavily potholed and the Eastern Freestate has had a lot of rain so the potholes are difficult to see and it is impossible to gauge the depth. We traveled in rain on and off from Dortrecht until we hit the N1 between Boem and Winburg.

Avoid using that route if at all possible.

Similar in the Eastern Cape, we normally take the back road from Cradock to Bethulie, to join the N1 at Springfontein. The road has deteriorated badly in sections, especially between Hofmeyr and Venterstad.

Another year of no maintenance and that road is gone.

The roads inside Cradock was also shocking, its obvious the minucipal management has brochures for expensive German cars crossing their desks rather than road maintenance equipment.
