Hi there,

I am looking for some advice about going to South Luangwa - is it
possible to enter the park from the Chifungwe gate off of the Great
North Road T2? Is it possible to drive through the park to the other
side on the roads? Or are they too difficult (4x4 but only one 4x4!) ?
We would be coming from Chingola and wanted to avoid having to drive
around to enter the park. Of course if it is recommended to drive to
the other side we certainly will do it!

Also, where are the good places to stay? camp?

Thanks for your advice,

Carolyn Johnston

Can not comment on entering SLNP from the other side, but
Wildlife camp is a nice place to stay at SLNP, We are staying there in 6
weeks from now.

I was going to suggest Wildlife camp as well.
Very nice place.
Otherwise Flatdogs (normally crowded, but has internet facilities
etc).

OK. I will look into the two places. Is there a way to make
reservations?? Can someone give me the email or webpage.

I would still LOVE to know about entering SLNP from the other side if
anyone knows that info. I like adventure, but not too much adventure!!

Thanks,
Carolyn

HI Carolyn

The short answer to your question is yes you can drive down from the
T2 down on to route 5, but it depends on the time of year. It is a
fantastic road to drive down. You have to drive down a very steep
winding escarpment which has stunning views but is very rocky. You
will then hit about 3 river crossings. Both are fordable at the right
time of year without a snorkel and the last river should be a dry
river bed. This all of course depends on when you are intening to go.
Ideally i would suggest only doing it from beginning August to Nov and
only then if the road has been graded.

Ask at wildlife camp or ZAWA before attempting the journey. It would
be a shame to start out only to find that it is not yet passable and
have to go all the way back down to Lusaka.

Hi Carolyn,

I'll tell you what I found out during my planning. Unfortunately we
_just_ missed out on the opportunity of providing you with first-hand
information ;-).

If you're talking about the route from Muchinga, it crosses the
escarpment and may get quite rough, muddy and difficult in the rainy
season, otherwise OK.

As always it's probably best to find out what conditions are like NOW.
We found ZAWA personnel to be very very helpful.

Enjoy,
Francois

In 2004 we entered SLNP from the Great North Road.
We had overnighted at Kapishya hot springs which is definitely worth a day or two.
Then travelled through Mpika and filled up with Diesel.
Shortly after Mpika we turned off east on a small gravel road. For the next few hours we saw no one and made a few wrong turns. Sods law we turned around about 1km from the park gate because we thought we were on the wrong route. Eventually found our way to the park gate.
Would have been a really cool place to bush camp.
I see the route is now marked on Tracks for Africa. When we did it only the turn off the great north road was marked but not the whole route.
In the dry season you need a 4x4 with good clearance. I wouldn't try it in the wet season because you will have 2 very tough river crossings. In the dry season the rivers were only about 30cms deep and the one that is in the park had sandbags on the river bed.
It took us a full day of driving to get from Kapishya to Wildlife camp with us probably spending about 3 hours getting lost.
Lots of tsetse flies in the north of the park.
Magnificent views from the escarpment over the lush Luangwa valley.
We enjoyed a stay at Wildlife and Flatdogs, just be careful of the overland trucks at flatdogs.

Enjoy

Cheers
JB
