November 2018, magic place as far as wildlife goes, but very hot that time of the year before the rains.  For 5 days we just drove up and down the river front and saw everything, including leopard twice and wild dogs chasing a buck through our camp site. Also two lion kill, one waterbuck at night close to our camp site in spotlight range, one buffalo by a large pack next to the river about 800m from our camp site.
They were busy building small ablusion blocks between camp sites, which means you would have to go ~50 - 75m from your site to ablusion. Best to plan for porta potti or hole in the ground for night time, just to many predators.
We stayed at Mag02 site. Lots of shade and view onto plain (from where the wild dog pack came), suitable for up to perhaps 4 or 5 vehicles. So are Mag04 and Mag05. Mag01 best view on river and game, but small and not much shade for more than 2 vehicles max I would say. Mag03 also nice but smaller than 02, 04 and 05. There are more camp sights, but the above was for me the best.
At Bad01 - Bad03 there are sand bottomed river crossings with reasonably clear water where you can see the bottom, we enjoyed quick cool-down dips there with suitable look-out for flat dogs and elephants.
It is an easy road to get there, from Maun via Mababe and then transit road, until you turn off to Magotha through a love dead forest is also easy going.  Also for game viewing next to the river. Once you do the water crossings you need something more than a soft roader.

When we visited it was late December. I can echo all your comments and need to emphasise the lovely surroundings that time of year, especially along the riverfront.

Hi Carlo,

I am just waiting for confirmation from Botswana Footprints but hopefully we will be there from the 9th Until 17th August.

Out of interest the last big Overland get together that I attended would have been 10 years years ago exactly at Kubu island for my 40th on the 10th of August. Was such an awesome 40th!

F*** I’m getting old!

Carlo the last about 100kms is dirt road some very good and some sandy. On the very good sections it’s easy to get going too fast but you have to be careful of soft “potholes”, some very big and deep, filled with soft almost powder type sand. They can be missed if you not careful and traveling too fast. There are some sandy sections also so deflate your tyres.

The last 2 kms is strip/twee spoor track.

The only water “crossing” is over the Khwai river but there is a steel bridge there so you don’t have to worry about water crossings.

Hope this helps. Please leave the place in good condition for us. :)
