Hi All,

Another attempt of making a video to document our latest trip.

Mapungubwe July 2021 4K

Still need to learn a lot and need better equipment but let me know what you think.

Hi Bruce,
Well done. I liked the way you spliced music, sound effects and voice-over. 78 views already is great! Lots of worthwhile information. Your still photos worked well too. Maybe include more?

You need to think about who your target audience is. Subscribers to this group can watch mopani trees and 4x4 tracks all day but for success with a wider audience, measured by how many people watch to the end, you may have to trim it down a lot.

Keep it up!

Well done Bruce, thanks for sharing. What camera did you use and was it mounted or hand held? I may have missed it, but was the video taken mostly on the Western side.

Thanks again.

Kind regards

James

Thank you Jeff. Honestly I haven’t even thought of target audience etc was just a bit of fun for the family that I thought I would share here. Still very much experimenting.
I do agree with the comment about mopani trees and 4x4 tracks - is a bit boring. Thank you again for the very helpful input. Appreciate it.

Kind regards

Thank you James.
Everything is hand held. I used a Gopro hero 8 and an iPhone 😂 oh and my AirPods for a mic.

I have just ordered a better camera and microphone to try and improve it.

Most of the video was taken on the western and south western side of the park. This is a good point though for future; I need to show where we are to improve the information.

Thanks for the feedback mate.

Hi Bruce my son and i were there earlier on in the year we also had enormous fun exploring some of those roads that seem to disappear in places. We had a wonderful time. We were in a subaru and managed all the roads and saw elephant crossing at the same spot and also enjoyed the sundowners on the river bank. It was our first trip there very special place. Really enjoyed the video. Thank you

Thank you Bertus.

It’s 10x better. More space, better handling on and off road and much more power. I would say it’s like comparing a D1 to a D3.
It’s only downfall is fuel consumption and range but it is better than the old one there also.

Thank you Mike.

It is better than the old one which we only had for about 6 months before deciding to upgrade it to a new one. It runs at about an average of 11ltrs per 100kms loaded and seems to like a cruising speed similar to a Defender (Puma) - 110ph to 120kph. The problem is it has a 40ltr fuel tank so when going to a place like Mapungubwe where the closest fuel station is 70kms away you have to carry extra fuel. We are however lucky with our setup, when im towing, I can carry 2 jerry cans on top of the Landy and two on the trailer - I suppose I could add more if needed. I think the Suzuki will be a bit difficult to use alone for those trips where fuel is not readily available without carrying extra jerry cans on its roof. (Which will exceed the recommended load capacity anyway) So the 130 very much becomes the mothership carrying all the supplies for the more overland type trips.
Its a great little, comfortable vehicle though, and I think its one of the few vehicles that has the character of a Defender.

Bruce I also enjoyed the video. Lots of merit in visiting places like this out of season. When we were there we discovered a dirt road that joins the two sections of the park inside the park. It looked like a public road. Jeez. Worst corrugations I have ever encountered. Regretted my decision to take that road. When we were there the ellies had pushed down long sections of fence next to the main road... I love that place...

I once, long ago, saw one being towed by a Winnebago RV.

Prolly for the same reason.

Thank you so much Hennie. I have bought some better cameras and mic’s this week, so hope to improve a lot on the next one.

I don’t think much has changed. The road you mention is not much better and has to be travelled at 70kph at least to smoothen out the corrugations, so not really a game drive road. There is also a section where the bridge has been washed away so there is a small detour where you have to go off of the road. Could be a problem in the wet season but in the dry its easy although a bit bumpy.

One disappointment about Mapungubwe, are all the broken fences. I don’t know why they don’t just remove them as they not doing anything anyway. The tree top board walk and hide has also unfortunately be damaged by the floods.

I agree, I would say probably my favourite NP in SA with the friendliest staff. Also more of an "off road park” and less polished, compared to Kruger for example.

Mike Ive seen a few. Apparently its pretty common for retired people who just travel around or stay in campers for long periods to do this. So we have a trailer that we leave as base camp and a 130 for transport on extended stays. They have their vehicle that stays as base camp and a Jimny for transport. (Opposite to us)

Supprisingly I met a few people on this trip that don’t have a home address. All they do is travel from campsite to campsite. Two of them had 200 series Toyotas, towing very expensive, fancy caravans with air conditioners, TV’s and flood lighting - think soccer stadium lighting which stayed on the entire night and irritated us…... so I think its a lifestyle choice more than a financial one.

On the subject of lighting, I found that all the campsites had excessive lighting, lighting up their campsites. The most popular seemed to be long poles with pretty much the sun attached to the end of it, that even at 100m a way it cast enough light for us to not need our own lights and gave archeyes to all the nocturnal animals.
We are the opposite where we only have lights that are necessary and when necessary, and they all get switched off when sitting around the fire or when we go to bed. Perhaps this is an old habit of trying to conserve battery power but there is also nothing better than a fire and a blanket of stars while sipping on a Captain. :)

Mike I have a small fold up tripod that I use as a handle. The camera, GoPro hero 8, is a “action camera” so it gets rid of lots of the shake by itself. I know some people use gimbals but im not that fancy or professional……... yet.

So in future I will probably use the GoPro for the driving type footage and then the canon when I need better quality pictures and footage where there will be less shake if you like. I dont know I have to experiment and learn. Right now its all foreign to me. :)

Bruce,
Thanks for sharing, well done on the footage.
In August 2017 when I was there the bridge was already washed away with a small detour.
I see it is marked as washed away on T4A map as well.
Hope you have recovered completely from covid?

Thank you Nico.

I bought a canon M50 mk2, a mic that looks like a dead hairy rat on it and I’m just waiting for stock of a 18mm-150mm or 55-200mm lens to arrive. I also got a media upgrade thingymajig for the gopro which improves the microphone on that too. Then a bunch of small accessories like tripods, extra memory cards,  etc.

I bought this camera as I believe it’s a very capable beginners camera so may need to upgrade in future.

For video nothing matches the Sony mirrorless cameras. The alpha series are amazing in particular the latest a6400. 4K endless shooting.

My Canon is parked for wildlife photography and I use the Sony for everything else now. Even underwater photography in a Ikelite underwater housing.

Flip to me a camera was a camera and there were a few options which gave possibly better pictures. I was shocked at how many options there actually are and it is not very hard to spend huge amounts of money on equipment. This is why I bought what I was told is a great entry level camera and will probably upgrade it once I know more about what I need.

If I'm not mistaken this M50 is also mirrorless which apparently is the one to buy at the moment. Who knows?

Thanks Bruce. I am also in the market for video  cameras. THe GoPro is an obvious choice but I was thinking of getting a dedicated video camera for shooting videos. I have a Canon 7D with some nice lenses which I can also use to shoot video with but I find it cumbersome with the microphone attached, hence the consideration of a dedicated video camera with built-in microphones.
I will welcome any comments and suggestions.

Hi Nico,
The gopro is a great little camera. I had one person rightfully ask me if filming while driving is it an issue. With the gopro it’s no harder than pointing at something. I think bigger more advanced cameras it won’t be as easy to film while driving and I will probably prefer not to do that unless I have a mount.

That video was shot using a gopro hero 8 and a cell phone. So very very basic. Editing was done using iMovie on my MacBook Pro.

With my little knowledge I would say you need a gopro for on the move type filming and a good stills/video camera for better pictures and filming things say in the campsite or while on foot.
If I look at someone like Edward Bath who does excellent video on YouTube he has a huge amount of equipment that he carries with him. Far too much for me and honestly I think it would frustrate me. I prefer to keep it simple but having said that I am not doing this for income or sponsorships. Just a bit of fun to record our trips like we all used to do on overland with our trip reports.

For all our overlanding and wildlife travelling needs, I use a dedicated video camera with decent zoom and image stabilisation plus a decent dashcam for 'fill in' and continuity. I'm not big on photography as a hobby, so I just use a bridge camera with decent zoom and stabilisation for all the stills. Even a decent smartphone is useful. For this you need to ensure that you have the charging and storage capability to keep your cameras operative and save all your footage until such time as you can edit out/chuck away what you don't need. A 2-4TB portable drive will be enough for a month or more.

I found that the stabilisation on Gopro's is not the best and it is a strain on the eye when used in videos without a lot of post processing. Framing your shots is also not as simple as with a dedicated camcorder. I know camcorders are not 'fashionable' anymore, but for what most overlanders want, this is still a superior tool to many of the social media/Youtube orientated stuff you get.

Congratulations Bruce on some great footage, very much enjoyed your video. Makes a nice distraction from lockdown in Melbourne.

I have an old car that I enter in a charity fundraising event, sort of an off road rally but not a race.

I have used an early GoPro on a rotating mount on the roof rack to capture some fun footage.
The mount is essentially a windscreen wiper motor controlled by a "black box" in the car to provide slow rotation in either direction.

Camera has an aftermarket battery pack to provide longer run time. Worked reasonably well but image stabilisation on my early GoPro is insufficient and the wide field of view makes everything appear so far away.

My next version would be some sort of gimbal mount plus a camera with better stabilisation. And an air blower to occasionally blow dust of the camera lens!

Looking foward to the next video!

Hi Bruce,

No. It is not replacing your gopro that you can dunk in the water or mount underneath your vehicle.  It is a handheld device which you can record with whilst walking. The footage stability is absolutely great.
