Hi all.

Anyone know where to get roof strobe lights in green?
Depending on cost will need about 3 to 5 of them.
(Will be used on anti poaching patrols)

Thank you

Bruce, read the small print in your insurance policy. Some insurers will
refute a claim if the vehicle is fitted with any form of "official" lights-
their logic is that by doing so you have crossed the boundary from private
use to some form of commercial use (even if it isn't for profit).
Cheers
Neale

Bruce - Neale has touched upon a very important aspect - if you are using your vehicle for work purposes, make sure that it is insured for business purposes and not only private use.

Just remember that by law for you to use a green flashing light on any public road you must be a member of civil defence, and be doing something for civil defence at the time. Same goes for red flashing lights with their setup.

Guys thank you for the advice, but this is volunteer work, which my insurance company has already "approved" for me. These lights are used on farm roads and in private reserves/fence patrols. Not public roads.

Now back to the topic, where is the best place to buy them?

Thank you

Jip - true. And you need to prove it when buying the lights.

Nope - the ones Bruce is refering to is not the crap neighbourhood watch lights. There are the ultra bright strobes.

I doubt we are talking about the same thing. They are not allowed to stock them and I don;t think they will be irresponsible enough to do so...

For Bruce’s purposes, I think even one of those little crappy lights will be good enough.

At night it is very dark and it will be visible

During the day time, it’s pointless!

The offroad rescue unit uses green lights - they should be able to point you in the right direction

Bruce, get hold of the guys from hazard (.co.za). They sell them. Also be aware that the pulse from the strobe units may disturb or enrage the animals (btdt).

Bruce- I remember long ago sitting at the side of the road with 3 of my
4x4's all fitted with 'little green running lights on the roof', and trying
to explain to Inspector Mtembu why they were there ...only got the convoy
back to JHB long after midnight with very unhappy clients...and I had to
take all the 3 vehicles for roadworthy. Luckily 'Oom Dup' saw the funny side
& re-roadworthied the vehicles instantly - but I did take the little green
lights off the roof.
Contact John Traas of SARSDOG ( that's SA Rescue Dog group) for info
relating to the legalities of little green lights on the roof - he also has
various other flashing lights , sirens, and more radios than I have on his

One can also get battery powered magnetic orange emergency strobe lights. They are quite robust - I've seen some people that leave them permanently on their vehicles and they don't fall off in offroad applications. If orange is acceptable as an alternative to green these might be an easy solution

Bud is correct regarding little green lights. The Road Traffic Act requires vehicles of certain dimensions (Height and length) to have what is called "marker lights" They are green, red and yellow. Green for the front, Yellow for the sides and red for the back. The reason for all of this, so that the size and orientation of the vehicle can be seen in the dark. Ever come up from behind a old bakkie from Lesotho that has been plastered with little pieces of yellow tape (not legal) and ever wondered what the hell is that. There is a specific format to adhere to so that all of us can recognize what we are approaching and avoid a collision. It works every where else in the world.

Animals are less prone to be disturbed by green or red light as they do not see those parts of the spectrum very well. If one hunts for vermin, you use either green of red light and the animal mostly cannot see you or the light.

Hi All,

Thank you for the suggestions and comments.

The little dome magnetic strobe that plugs into your cigarette lighter is perfect. The Midas ones with a rotating globe are no good.

Guys these lights will not be used on public roads, hi-ways, in convoys etc etc. They are only used to identify individual vehicles that are driving around/patroling the parks and farm roads in the middle of the night. Orange is a great suggestion but they are too easy to get, for example millions of road work vehicles have them, so they can easily be stolen and used. Orange is no good.
They also have to be strobes as they are more expensive and easy to tell apart from the cheap rotating lights from a distance.

I will look at the hazard website tonight.

Thanks again.

Used a strobe this past weekend. Wildebeest, Zebra, Impala, Giraffe, Kudu, a Fox of some sort, Jackel and Rhino didnt mind or even flinch when we parked next to them or passed them with the light on. (Oh and some cows.) :)
