In my view MTs are more specialised than ATs, which means you should fit
MTs when your travelling is specialised towards mud. If not, which is
mostly the case, ATs are probably a better balance. I've been using ATs
on a Defender now for many years and have been very happy with their
performance on tar, gravel, stone, sand and rock. This past holiday we
encountered a terrific amount of mud, slush and clay and the performance
of the ATs in those conditions absolutely astonished me. When it was
needed grip was there, when we needed to we could plane the tyres and
self-cleaning worked all the time.

For these reasons I would recommend ATs, unless your travels specialise
towards mud as mentioned.

makes perfect sence.
What is YMMV btw?

This was about 2 hours into the trip and I had checked the tyres before
I left. (I will check the gauge that I use). It is very possible I
picked up a slow puncture along the route.
I did notice the whole Disco started to vibrate at over 95km/h. So I did
stop and do the usual visual checks and checked if the wheel nuts were
tight, but I did not check tyre pressures, which I guess I should have.
I wrote it off to the road serface and me needing to fit new shocks.

Now more importantly, should I put Mud Terrain or All Terrain tyres on
the Disco?

I beg to differ.
When I contacted BFG a few years back, with a query as to why the MT's
seemed to be more rugged than the AT's, the answer was

"AT = Mud and Snow Rated whereas MT = Mud, Snow and ROCK rated"

The MT is a tougher tyre, as borne out by multiple trips with similar
vehicles, but AT vs MT - MT had no issues, AT had issues.

The MT is NOT only for MUD.

If you spend more of your time OFF-road - like in the case of Bruce and
myself - then in my opinion (2 cents worth), the MT is the better tyre.
If you drive 99% on the road, then perhaps the AT is a better tyre.

Hi All

After listening to all he comments on the AT versus mud tyres I have to add
my comments. Most comments come from people using only one type and not
making a real educated decision. Also some comments in the past went around
the road noise issue. Now I would like to say that if road noise is a
problem for you then go for Michelin road tyres for your truck. A Defender
is noisy and extra tyre noise will not be heard over the whining transfer
box above 100kmh this is also applicable in a Disco 1 maybe Disco 2. I have
had muds on my 90 from new and AT's on my Disco. I now have a set of Cooper
ST's on both my trucks. I am definitely going back to muds when they are
shot next. I loved my muds.

VIVA MUDS Cooper or BF. Used BF Muds since 1998. The price when I needed to
replace made me change to Coopers. If you want to spend more time on tar
than gravel then get a car and get rid of the off roader. Too many people
want to make cars out of trucks.

Finally - some sense being spoken.

It's like these guys buying a fancy machine, then complaining that their
high performance tyre doesn't perform in the non-tar and when they switch to
a tyre than can, blow the tyre because they are driving it at 130kph+
constantly.

Or some have 2 sets of tyres, on separate rims, In my dads case, Goodyear
Wrangler RT/SA for normal use and soft trips and Wranglet MT on Pro Whites
for the proper trips.

Thanks Guys for all the advice.

I have decided on Mud Terrains in either BFs or Cooper depending which I
can find after I have saved up enough and also depending on price. So far
the BFs are winning by quite a long way due to a saving of R370 per
tyre....(almost 1 tyre for free)

Only now picked up on this thread and I must agree with the proponents of the MT tyres.
 
I fitted BFG A/T's prior to my trip to Uganda this past December. It was the biggest disappointment of the trip. Prior to fitting the A/T's I used Bridgestone M/T.
 
My gripes are mainly concerned with road holding. I find that the AT's 'tram line', i.e. they tend to follow the lowest point of the track and I found myself constantly struggling to maintain my chosen line. This can be quite disconcerting when the vehicle suddenly veers off to one side whilst I anticipated another direction - almost like riding a stubborn horse.I also found that they tend to aquaplane quite easily - even with only a relatively small water puddle. I find this very irritating and I never had these problems with the MT's - they went exactly where I steered them..
 
About the only good thing I can say in their favour is that they are considerably quieter on tar.
