Hi guys,

What kind of consumption of people realistically getting with the above configuration?

Cheers,
Clem

1HZ naturally aspirated? 6-7l per 100km down to 4-6 in the muck.

If you join the Land Cruiser Club of Southern Africa forum at www.landcruiserclub.co.za and search for the Fuel Consumption Registry you will get some more specific information.

Clem, I can't give exact answer as I had that V6 in a double cab hilux so weight, aerodynamics and gearing would be different BUT I ran that on anything as low as 13.2 (unlaboured) to 14.5 around town. My average tank to tank for daily Jhb use was prolly around 14.0. Worst ever was towing the off-road trailer into a mother of a headwind maintaining 120km/h and got 19 (all as l/100km).
Heine has the Cruiser V6 so might offer better info although he has a house permanently strapped to its rear.

Thanks Marc. Much appreciated. Hopefully Heine will chime in somewhere along the line. What's the motor like? Reliable? Enough torque and KWs to do the job (never mind what the Jap numbers say on paper - they're not DIN numbers)?

Off topic regarding your enquiry.

A friend of mine recently traded his Series 79 Petrol (4.0 V6) for a 1HZ Diesel (New).

The petrol has a problem with delayed throttle response and Toyota is aware of the problem but unable to fix it. If you can live with it, great! Otherwise wait for the V8 Diesel.

I consider this guy a bit of a Cruiser fanatic as he owns apart from the 79 1HZ also a 200 VX TD, a 80 VX TD, a 80 4l Petrol and a 75 4L Petrol !

Johan,

Thank you very much for the input. Question is… When is that damn turbodiesel V8 going to arrive and will they put it in the 78? :-) I was not aware of a throttle lag. But I have a Mercedes-Benz that will do that very occasionally – normally when the thing has been given in "Granny mode" for too long and then you suddenly want to go like hell. :-)

I read an interesting argument on the V8 Turbodiesel today!

Boils down to this:

Auz is only selling the V8 TD in the 79. Retailing around ZAR 700 000 equivilent.

SA is selling both the V6 and 1HZ Diesel at lower volumes than in Auz.

The V8 TD does not like our dirty fuel (500ppm).

Not viable for TSA to extend the 79 series with another engine.

There is a couple of 200GX's running around but the are fuggly!

If that is the case, then maybe my choices are between a double cab with the V6 petrol and a 78 series with the 1HZ. Is there much of a difference in the fuel consumption between the two? I believe that the 1HZ is hardly a fuel sipper either.

Clem:

I drive a 1HZ, kitted for travel, so always loaded.

When I drive standard, no trailer, and keep speeds at 110 kph true speed, I get almost 7kpl

When I push it to try maintain 120 – it drops to 6kpl

When I am towing the caravan, it drops to just over 5kpl

I do have 285 75R16’s BFG MT KM2’s fitted. No roof rack.

I’ve just fitted a 76mm mandrel bent free flow exhaust, which has improved the drivability of the vehicle quite a bit. Revs much better. Just need to get a dyna tune to bring it up to its best with the new exhaust.

My reason for buying a V6 was the huge difference in performance
compared to the minimal consumption savings of the 1 HZ

I really really like the 78 and the LC DC. When time comes, Amakhosi will be replaced by the petrol DC. The smallish consumption premium the petrol over the diesel is worth the extra 80Kw. I tested the standard diesel and while it can cruise happily at 100 plus, overtaking ability was a big problem for me. Ignoring the simplicity argument the petrol won it for me.

Agree that TSA cannot loose the 79 series with 1HZ as the farmer type market for those is huge!  BUT if that 79 was available in a double cab with decent diesel motor those volumes would multiply dramatically!!!!

What I can't figure is why the 78 is the most expensive of the vehicles when it is also the most basic!

Doubt it will last a million k's like the diesel , but then I don't intend to use it for anything but overlanding , so it should outlast me in any case. Remember it's the same motor that's in the prado and  fortuner , so it's been proven and also spares are cheap (especially from after market sources) . Also very cheap to chip and free flow if the mood takes you. I have also pulled the cats , so it can run LRP if neccessary .

... And remember that these days the fuel company fuggers are ripping the diesel price to hell ... Not the cheaper option by far!

Thank you Heine. Well tried engine then. Now another question...what's the LC like driving on tar? Is it reasonably comfortable and what is the road noise insulation like (I'm thinking long haul driver fatigue for example)?

Much better seating position ,leg room and aircon than the defender.  Std it's a much harder ride though - first overland vehicle I've had to soften up instead of the other way around. But add some aftermarket suspension ,and it's pretty good.  I definitely feel less tired and sore than I did in the defender .

Also the std rims and tyres are agricultural to say the least . Again , first overland vehicle I've had that putting MT's on actually improved the comfort and handling .

If you haven't done so already check out my blog for a list of changes . I've done more than what's listed and also made some changes  , but the major things are listed there - hopefully I'll get round to updating it soon

Clem we did a 9000km round trip in 4 weeks and we were comfortable all the time,79 single cab. Some very long days in the saddle with little driver fatigue. Road noise will depend on the tyre choice, with my muds on, noisy on tar, but with the AT’s on it is quite.

Yes there are times when the 1HZ does not have the power but only maybe 5% of your driving time. In any case with a loaded vehicle driving faster than 110km / hour is not safe IMHO.

Fuel consumption with the diesel, based on my 3.5T loaded 79,  does not change that much between the open road (6.5km / L) and the sand / bush (5.8km/L) driving, I think you will find this very different with the new Petrol motor.

Enjoy making your choice, whichever  one will put a smile on your face.

I’m amazed as my 100VX with the 4.2 TDi has given me 7.15km/l over 85000 km at speeds normally a bit quicker than 100kmh and it has a roof rack attached permanently.
