Self Assessment:::

With all sincerity, I did not regret staying in Manila right after my high school reunion last August 3-7, 2019 and until our Golden Reunion last Jan.24-25, 2019 or a total of six months stay. Staying here not only allowed me to attend GR 19 meetings called by the Manila Core Group lead by Peter and also gave me a chance to work with Brod Nelson, Vince , the son in law of Brod Nelson, Brod Larry and Joven who had a unique friendship with the Printer.
While Brod Nelson kept on asking for pictures whether it was a graduation picture, a solo picture or a family picture, I had a chance to follow up all Oval 69ers to hurry up and submit these pictures to be able to finish the Souvenir Program. Brod Nelson had to borrow the Simper Fidelis Of the late Cora Castro to have a complete set of graduation pictures.
Meanwhile Jimmy Manzo from Canada sent lots of pictures of all Oval 69ers including the past Reunions. Edgar Martir too sent old pictures of past Reunions and finally Brod Nelson was able to complete the picture requirements and arrangements. . Now it was time to organize the SP which has to include messages from the USC President and all the past professors. It has to include such parts as the preface, the history of past Reunions, the Oval 69 Story and all the pictures arranged by Brod Nelson as “then” and “now”. Meanwhile Vince who is an expert in photoshop, cleaned up all the picture arrangements and included all the write ups where they were needed.
Aside from the SP work, there was a need to clean up the list of those who were sure to attend and those who were not. Then there was also that need for ensuring the Hotel bookings of Oval 69ers at Parklane Hotel, the decided venue. Joven had some special arrangements with Parklane so were able to get a discounted rate. Lily also had some special arrangements with Arterra Hotel in Mactan and likewise we were given that discounted rate.
Meanwhile the Cebu Group focused on the Gala Nite Program And It’s Requirements for success.
Time to finalize the SP came. The SP Committee had to make several visits to the Printer to get a first draft and to do some proofreading. To make the long story short, the SP was completed.
Completing the initial payments and Registration payments for Oval 69ers was not an easy task. I had to burn my midnight candles to follow up as the objective is to make the Registration day as easy as possible. It worked and Registration day was fast and easy. Excel charts were updated almost everyday to show payments and to ensure completion.
Again, it’s not my observation on the overall outcome of GR 19..Even the former professors approached me the following morning and told me that the overall program was excellent..
I should say this was a result of a combined effort of the Cebu Organizers, the Manila Group And the Overseas Group. Reserve the last for the best, the Overall Coordinator did a good job of putting everything into one basket of Success. This guy is none other than Brod Joe Victoria, the champion organizer of all Reunions.
Therefore I did not regret extending my stay in Manila as TBB Brod Tito Densing keeps on inviting Oval 69ers to Tongyan Restaurant For Group discussion. Brod Nelson and Larry and Peter also took turns in that famous Larry’s Bar in BGC.
Being concerned of what is left for follow up , and in order to make that GR 19 a great success I believe is what I worked hard for and it did result in Success. It was done better for an Oval 69er who stays in the center, I mean Manila....Onwards we go and start dreaming for our next Reunion in 2021:: Thanks for all your concerted effort and cooperation...If you ask me If we will do a replica of GR 19 in 2069, I would say I still love to do it but the registration would be costly at 50,000 per person and we would spend our senior bonus of 100,000 as Brod Bebian jokingly said. The big question is who will be the last man standing? Perhaps 90 percent of Oval 69 res would be gone by that time. Therefore let’s do it very 2 years for those who love to see all Oval 69ers still alive...al t....

Hello Als,

May I add to that.

You mentioned burning your midnight candles. I think that is an understatement. I feel that you almost do not need any sleep because I get messages even at 3:00 a.m. leading me to think that you were in the States. Your tenacity and persistence really paid off. Classmates who hardly respond to Messenger and emails started communicating and eventually joined.

One more guy we need to acknowledge most. Edgar Martir, who we really missed this time. If it were not for his supreme efforts almost 20 years ago locating, contacting and communicating with the Stateside and Canada classmates, we wouldn’t have that first US reunion or this 69 GR where so many of them spent time, effort and money to come and attend. So, THANKS EDGAR.

Lastly, I would still remember those classmates and professors who did not attend, either by choice or by circumstances - sickness; family matters that conflicted with our schedule; inability to travel, etc. They are still part of us and who we were and who we now are. Let’s hope we will see them come 2021, maybe already with canes, or with care givers accompanying them, but still healthy and kicking.

So to all, keep well and God bless.

Jkc
