((Shopping Parade ; Outpost Eden))
: As Virax secured the would-be bomber, and Katie sat down to take a breather (or "cougher"), Sterek felt his adrenaline levels slowly returning to normal. Commander Velana had sounded rather irritated over the commlink - which in itself was unusual, because he'd heard she was Vulcan - but he would deal with that as it came later. Right now, they had bombs to defuse.:
Burner: Well done Ensign Sterek.
Sterek: Thank you, Lieutenant.
Burner: Thanks Mr KeH’Gan, Mr Virax.
KeH’Gan : Thank you LT. You are quite Welcome.
Virax: You are very Welcome LT. I am quite impressed with how efficient Starfleet security personnel are in a crisis. I am pleased I accepted this posting. I hope to continue to be a valuable asset.
: Sterek nodded to Virax in acknowledgement before his attention was diverted by the arrival of the small medical team. He directed them to sweep the parade for civilians who may have been affected by the gas before discharging the civilian woman to their care. She attempted to give Sterek a grateful hug before staggering off with them (her legs still weren't quite working). Sterek bore the imposition with as much dignity as he could muster, and had just managed to disengage himself from the encounter when a human Ensign in Engineering gold arrived along with her team.:
Burner: You must be Cartwright?
Cartwright: Yes Lieutenant.
Burner: Ok everyone, we need to check for these explosives. Use all scanners and tricorders, but for goodness sake be careful. They may be booby trapped.
: Rosalie nodded and opened her tricorder as Sterek observed Burner carefully, still concerned about the state of her health.:
KeH’Gan: Aye Sir, proceeding with extreme caution.
Sterek: Lieutenant Burner, may I suggest that you delegate this task to us while you report to Sickbay?
Burner: I’m fine. I can sort my coughing out AFTER we defuse the bombs.
: Sterek did not press the issue.:
(( Corridor; Outpost Eden ))
: With the help of his new tricorder, courtesy of the newly-arrived Engineering team, he joined the others in their sweep of the area, proceeding slowly and silently until Burner spoke up.:
Burner: Here! I’m getting… : cough : a reading…
KeH'Gan: Yes LT I am getting the same reading on my tricorder.
: Sterek maintained a watch on the surrounding area, still on the alert for any more hostiles (he told himself this was reasonable caution, rather than the last few vestiges of paranoia from his near-miss with post-traumatic stress back in the shop), as Cartwright hurried to confirm. :
Cartwright: Okay, we need to get inside here. :Pointing at the panel: But let's go slowly.
: The panel was removed to reveal a small room, with very little light. A flashing device was on the ground, which Sterek assessed to be the explosive device, but that was not the first thing which drew his attention: a bound human Ensign with a tattooed face sat nearby.:Burner: Ensign Scott?! I thought you were…
KeH'Gan: TAMATI?! Are you Ok?
Scott: ???
: The lights on the device pulsed faster. Faint, metaphorical alarm bells began to ring in Sterek's mind. The presence of a captive here was likely no coincidence; it was possible that Ensign Scott had been rigged up with something, perhaps a proximity device, that would cause the bomb to detonate if the hostage was interfered with.:
Burner: Don’t worry, we can… : cough : sort this.
: Katie looked over her shoulder to the others.:
Burner: Right?
Cartwright: Absolutely.
: As Virax caught up with them again, Sterek wondered why Cartwright was crossing her fingers behind her back. :
Virax: LT I must inform you that this device type I have dealt with before in recent Vhir Sulla attacks in the capitol. They are very sensitive to any sudden movement.
: Sterek watched as Keh'Gan began to enter the small room. His eyes flicked to the tricorder readings again, then back to the Klingon security officer.:
KeH'Gan: Ensign may I untie Mr Scott?
Sterek: I advise caution, Ensign KeH'Gan. As SubLt Virax advises, any sudden movement could cause the bomb to detonate. The presence of Ensign Scott here is likely to be a trap, intended to trick us into approaching the device in order to increase the number of casualties.
Scott/Burner/KeH'Gan/Virax/Cartwright : ???
Sterek: My qualifications as a negotiator do not extend to explosive devices. All I can suggest is that we try to complete a more detailed scan of the device before attempting to transport either it or Ensign Scott out of range, but there may be a more optimal solution I am not aware of. Ensign Cartwright, what do your scans of the device show?
Cartwright: ???
Sterek: Mr Virax, can you provide any additional information about these devices?
Scott/Burner/KeH'Gan/Virax : ???
To be continued...
