-> Portrait: KIM Tae-Kyung director of "The Ghost"
Short Curriculum of KIM Tae-Kyung:
http://bifff.org/en/archive/person1.php?id=313
Synopsis of "The Ghost" :
http://bifff.org/en/archive/film1.php?id=735
During the BIFFF (Brussels Int'l Festival of Fantastic Film), we had
the chance to meet the director of "The Ghost", KIM Tae-Kyung (KTK) and
to escort him during his short stay in Brussels, the Capital of EU.
Although KTK is one of the youngest director in Korea, his first movie
as director was a great success in Korea when the film was out on the
screens (although "Shrek 2" and "The Day After Tomorrow" were screened
at the same time).
KTK is quite a shy but very nice man behind his glasses. Loyalty and
sincerity might be the motto of his life.
Every moment of his life is a source of inspiration for his movies'
scenarii. That's how it happened for "The Ghost".
First of all, "The Ghost" is not a common horror movie since you won't
see any blood (except during one scene). Indeed, KTK doesn't like blood
!
Nevertheless, he's much more fascinated by Water. You can notice it in
"The Ghost", water element is "omnipresent".
KTK's fascination for water takes its 'source' in the duality of Water.
Water is necessary for life but at the same time, Water can kill life !
As KTK explained, you can be drawn, you can die of drinking too much
water.
Another aspect of the movie is the "College-adolescence" period. A very
critical period, according to KTK. Between children and adult status.
It's also a period during which violence (not only physical but much
more pscyhological) may happen between adolescents.
For sure, KTK has been touched and marked by this (or his ?) adolescent
period of life but also by the familial values.
The aspect of "possession" is tackled as well. "Possession" is still
anchored in some asian believes where the body could be considered just
as a clothe.
The spirit (or the soul) of someone could (ex)change his/her "clothe"
with another one.
Finally, a question remains "What's better ? To keep living without
remembering his/her past ? or Finding the pieces' puzzle of his/her
past that you can't remember ?"
If you have the opportunity to watch this movie, see it with these
thoughts in your mind ... you'll watch this movie with another
perspective.
