Issues with API credentials

Hello Outbrain-Team,

Since I had to change my Outbrain password, I've had a problem retrieving data from the API. I noticed it with the tool funnel.io. It shows that my account has no rights (see screenshot). I tried to send a request to https://api.outbrain.com/amplify/v0.1/login with Postman. Unfortunately, I get the same message here:

}

I can log in to Outbrain (https://my.outbrain.com/login) and I am an administrator. I have also filled out the form again. I received an email confirming that my account is authorised.

The accounts of my colleagues give the same error.

What could be the reason?

Hi Nino,

Thank you for reaching out to the API support team. 

Since you had to reset your password to access Amplify, this also automatically reset all of the credentials and tokens you use, for API integration. 

In this case we'd advise you to re-generate a new token, you can do so here. Or in the case of Funnel.io you'll have authorise again - meaning that you'll have to re-connect either the user to the Funnel.io account or to enter a new token, which you can generate above. 

In both cases we'd advise that you consult with Funnel.io support, maybe they have best practice advice.

Hi Ales,

thanks for your answer. I opened the link and created a new token. Then I opened postman an did the following request:

Get
Headers
    Key: Authorization
    Value: BASIC BASE-64-ENC(username:userpassword)

I should actually get a 200 back, as I have regenerated the token. Authentication works exactly like this in funnel.io. But I get the message:

    "message": "Unauthorized: Bad credentials"

How can I check my access?

Hi Nino,

The token you generate on the web-link you can use directly in the Funnel.io, no need for creating another token via the API. 

Both things do the same, one via the web interface, the other via the API.

Hi Ales,

I talked with funnel.io and they said that the only one way to connect funnel.io with outbrain is to login via username und password. I have no opportunity to connect via token. Bevore I have to change my password the login via username und password works fine.

Why I can't login via my username? Can you check my account please?

Thank you for the feedback. 

In this case, you have to login again in the Funnel.io, with your email and password, that you use for the Amplify dashboard. 

If you'd still have troubles logging in, I suggest you remove the current integration and set a new one, with your current credential.

I did it but I got the same error message "Bad credentials".

I did the following steps:

  1. Login in Outbrain with my username und password --> works
  2. Went to the site "Generate Amplify Api Token". Type down my password. --> I got a Token
  3. Login in funnel.io --> works
  4. Deleted all old crendital from Outbrain --> works
  5. Deleted all old connections from Outbrain --> works
  6. Connected the new data source Outbrain. I had to add a new credential and provide with my username and password (see screenshot) --> works
  7. I got the message "Access denied. Invalid credentials" (see screenshot). The credential are definitely the same credential that I used in step 1 --> not working

My account has a two-factor-authentification.

What I do wrong?

I kindly ask if you turn to funnel.io and ask them to check their logs, what's actually happening in the background. 

If you share the second screenshot with them, based on the technical reference, they should be able to provide you with a bit more insights and we can later continue from there, if needed:

i asekd funnel.io. This is the answer:

"We have looked into the case, and at this time, we’re not seeing any issues on our end. We recommend reaching out to Outbrain support to further troubleshoot and identify what might be causing the problem.
If you're comfortable using the terminal or command prompt on your computer, you can test your Outbrain credentials directly by running the following command (just replace the placeholder values with your actual Outbrain username and password):
curl -u YOUR_OUTBRAIN_USER_NAME:YOUR_OUTBRAIN_PASSWORD https://api.outbrain.com/amplify/v0.1/login
This command is taken directly from Outbrain’s API documentation and is the same method our connector uses to authenticate. If the credentials don’t work using this method, they won’t work through our connector either."

I send a curl request from my command and get the same message "{"message":"Unauthorized: Bad credentials"}".

I'm writing on this thread because we are also experiencing the exact same issue reported by Nino.

Our internal systems, which rely on the Outbrain API, have suddenly stopped working. We can confirm that when attempting to re-authenticate, even to generate a new token, we receive the error response: {"message":"Unauthorized: Bad credentials"}

Since this issue appears to be affecting multiple users, could you please provide more details on the nature of the problem? We would also appreciate an estimated timeline for a resolution, if possible.

curl -v --trace-time -u 'username:password' https://api.outbrain.com/amplify/v0.1/login

We deployed a small fix into our production, which will help us better pin-point the possible cause of the issue. 

I'd like to kindly ask if you could try and re-connect your Outbrain account with the Funnel.io system, please? 

And let me know what the response would be, please? 

If there would be errors or you had issues with connecting with Funnel.io, please also try the cURL command: curl -v --trace-time -u 'username:password' https://api.outbrain.com/amplify/v0.1/login

I changed my password an tried the following things:

First: Login Outbrain Account --> Click Aplify Api Token --> Enter my new password --> I got a Amplify API Token. That works

Second: Login Funnel Account --> Delete my old credential --> Generate a new credential with my new password --> Error message "Invalid credential". Same error as the screenshot from my last email.

Third: Do the curl command curl -v --trace-time -u 'username:password' https://api.outbrain.com/amplify/v0.1/login with my new password --> Same error as the screenshot from my last email.

The username is nino.baltes right?
