Thanks guys. Upon close inspection I actually did discover that my original remedy worked. The shortcuts were still there but along with them were the copies of the original documents. I just transferred the original files to another stick scanned and rescanned for viruses. I tested the files and they all opened. Quite a handy tool KRD.
