We support marriage equality and support the movement to secure equal treatment under law for same-sex couples. We also support the freedom of churches and religious entities to decide how to administer marriage as a religious sacrament without government interference. We oppose discriminatory federal and state constitutional amendments and other attempts to deny equal protection of the laws to committed same-sex couples who seek the same respect and responsibilities as other married couples. The Los Angeles action to Free Bradley Manning of Aug 16, endorsed by both Out Against War and LA LGBT Greens, the same day Ecuador gave asylum to Julian Assange, started with some 30 at Syd  Kronenthal Park in Culver City near the end of the Expo Line, and decamped to Motor/Venice near Obama’s California Election headquarters where some 25 chalked, waved signs, held a giant Free Bradley Manning banner, and listened to speeches.  At 8p the group decamped again to the British Consulate on Wilshire.  It was led by ANSWER people and attended by many Vets.  Other Bradley Manning actions on the same day of Aug 16 occurred in Oakland (6 arrests where the Obama office was occupied and activists actually attacked by Obama staffers), Portland (6 arrests), and Seattle.  Julian Assange on Aug 19 in London called for the U.S. government to release “hero Bradley Manningone of the world’s foremost political prisoners”; to ”renounce its witchhunt against Wikileaks”; and to end the “war on whistle-blowers” (LAT Aug 20 A3).  The Aug precourt-martial hearing for Bradley Manning began on Aug 27. Army Col. Denise Lind, the judge handling the case, declared on Aug 30 that Pfc. Bradley Manning’s formal court martial is now scheduled to take place between Feb 4 and March 15. The 24-year-old Manning faces a possible life sentence if convicted of leaking hundreds of thousands of documents, including cables and war logs, to the secret-spilling website Wikileaks. Lawyers discussed various evidentiary issues during a three-day pretrial hearing that concluded Aug 30 in Fort Meade, Md. Both sides are scheduled to return to court in October for another hearing. Manning is held in Fort Leavenworth Kansas between hearings. Another action outside Obama’s Campaign Headquarters is scheduled for Thur Sep 6 5-8p at Motor/.Venice. BE THERE WITH FRIENDS/BANNERS!

We won’t go back! We will fight back!”    The march from Hollywood/Vine ended at Grauman’s Chinese Theatre and featured many speakers.  He stated:
”There were a few hundred at best but both women and men and different speakers from some small unions and ethnic groups (no church people) but young women too. The parade route was mostly through blocked off and deserted Sun streets but there were big crowds of tourists on Hollywood Blvd which was good and lots of TV coverage-- also good. The visual is so good in front of Dolby Theatre I wished there were a few thousand instead which would have been more impressive.”
