LA LGBT GREENS/OUT AGAINST WAR NEWSLETTER NOVEMBER 2014 Volume 14 #11
…………………………………………………....................................................
SAME SEX MARRIAGE:
Jitters on how the Supreme Court will rule on its same-sex marriage cases were evident but it came as a surprise that it refused to rule on the appeals of 11 states on Oct 6 thus allowing the original decision to stand (Time Oct 20 p7,14; LAT Oct 5 A22;Oct 6 A6;Oct 7 A1,A12;Oct 8 A5,A6,A15; FILA Oct 16 p14). The decision meant that same sex marriage was legal immediately in Indiana, Oklahoma, Utah, and Wisconsin, and later in North Carolina, South Carolina, Colorado, Kansas, West Virginia, and Wyoming. This brought the number of states allowing same-sex marriage to 30 along with the District of Columbia.
On Oct 7 the 9th Circuit Court also rejected same sex marriage bans in Idaho and Nevada but applies also to all Western U.S. states and therefore ends bans in Alaska, Arizona, and Montana.
This brings the number of states allowing same-sex marriage to 35 along with the District of Columbia. The states have 30 days to appeal the decision. Same sex marriage was on hold in Idaho after its appeal but the hold was lifted on Oct 10; Nevada will not appeal and marriages began there on Oct 10 (LAT Oct 9 A12;Oct 10 A19 (cartoon);Oct 11 A1,A13,A15; FILA Oct 16 p14). On Oct 12 the ban on same sex marriage in Alaska was also struck down formally on state appeal (LAT Oct 13 A5) and occurred in Idaho on Oct 15 (LAT Oct 16 A8). Sam sex marriages started in Arizona on Oct 17 (LAT Oct 18 A12), Wyoming on Oct 21 (LAT Oct 22 A15)
The federal government will recognize same sex marriage benefits in 7 more states- Colorado, Indiana, Nevada, Oklahoma, Utah, Virginia, and Wisconsin (LAT Oct 18 A12). This brought the number of states having federally recognized same sex benefits to 26 plus the District of Columbia. The number was extended again to 32 on Oct 26 when same sex couples in Alaska, Arizona, Idaho, North Carolina, West Virginia, and Wyoming were added (LAT Oct 26 A21).
The dilemma of the Republican Party over same sex marriage was discussed in LAT Oct 8 A6.

OCCUPY
A LA Times editorial recommended that corporations should be allowed to fail rather than being rescued by the Government in response to the AIG lawsuit that it should been one of the favored corporations classified as “too big to fail” (LAT Oct 10 A18).
Two major advocacy groups (the California Reinvestment Coalition and Greenlining Institute) called on the federal government to stop the merger of CIT group and Pasadena’s One West Bank deeming it “the last thing that California needs is a too-big-to-fail bank for the 1%” (LAT Oct 14 B1).
English artist Banksy and his Occupy satiric art were discussed in LA Weekly Oct 17 p36 in connection with how his Haight Street Rat graffiti drawing got to be exhibited in the US Bank Tower in downtown Los Angeles (until Nov 28). Most of his San Francisco graffiti art had been defaced or whitewashed after the Occupy movement died away. He decried the herd mentality of the Occupy movement.
Columnist Michael Hiltzik in LAT Oct 29 B1 wrote that “wealth inequality demands reversal”. He quoted Thomas Pikety and two economists, UC Berkeley’s Emmanuel Sanz and London School of Economic’s Gabriel Zucman. They described the process of greater economic equality from the 1930a with the N ew Deal to the late 1970s. In 1979, the top 0.1% owned 7% of US household wealth. By 2012, it was 22%. The next 0.9% share of the wealth barely grew however, while the upper 10% excluding the top 1% actually shrank as did the wealth of the middle class. (36% in 1979 relative to 23% in 2012, about the same level as in 1940). Today the top 1% save about 35% of their income, but the bottom 90% save almost zero. The economists’ solution? Progressive income and estate taxation. The New Deal remedy of a income cap after which 100% was returned to the federal government was not of course mentioned.
Columnist Michael Hiltzik in LAT Nov 2 B1 warned voters about the risks from Big Money, especially in Props 45 (Kaiser, Blue Shield,Wellpoint/Anthem about $57 million) and 46 ($60 million mostly from large corporations).
