Volunteer to Rake It Up on January 26th
posted January 16, 2008.
A call to all OU students...
University of Oklahoma students are being asked to volunteer Saturday, Jan. 26, to Rake It Up, an effort designed to prepare the campus landscape for reforestation later this spring. The University will launch the largest tree-planting effort since OU’s first President, David Ross Boyd, planted the first trees over 110 years ago.
The worst ice storm in Oklahoma history ravaged the state in December. While the OU Landscape and Physical Plant staff continue to address major debris clean-up, the help of OU students is needed to rake, pile and bag small twig and leaf debris that still litter the Norman campus. The clean-up efforts are necessary before the more than 1,000 trees lost to the ice storm on the Norman campus can be replaced. Preliminary estimates indicate that it will require $1.7 million to clean up, prune existing trees, remove severely damaged tree and purchase and plant new ones.
“I am told over and over again by students that the beauty of the campus was the first thing that attracted them to come to OU,” said Molly Shi Boren, First Lady of the University. “And that, as students, it has comforted, inspired and sustained them. Now they are seeking ways they can help to restore the magnificent tree canopy of the campus for their and future generations of OU students,” she said. Ms. Boren said that the overall effort will ultimately involve faculty, staff and alumni in addition to students.
Box lunches will be provided to participating students who are being asked to volunteer a couple of hours of their time beginning at 10 a.m. on Jan. 26. They will be guided in the activity by OU landscapers, who are familiar with the locations commonly known as Adopt-An-Area sites.
