Meet our Cajun Band LA-TO-PEA RAMBLERS

These four musicians have played Cajun music for several decades with some of the best-known Cajun bands in south Louisiana.  They have come together to play at our Reunion.

On Fiddle will be Jamie Bearb – one of the finest Cajun fiddlers playing today.  Jamie is a 7th-generation Louisianan – born and raised in Lafayette, LA.  In addition to fiddling, Jamie sings and composes songs.  He plays regularly with the well-known Cajun band HIGH PERFORMANCE featuring Steve Riley and Jamie Bearb and has also played with JAY CORMIER & CAJUN COUNTRY as well as other bands over the years.

On Accordion (the old Abbeville Air Compressor) will be Brandon Degeyter – his fingers are magic on the diatonic keyboard.  Currently Brandon plays with his Cajun band BRANDON DEGEYTER AND THE MIRE PLAYBOYS in which Brandon is the accordionist and lead vocalist.   He also plays with CAJUN REFLECTION and has played with CAJUN EXPRESS and other bands.  Brandon has Guidry roots on his maternal line.

On Bass will be David Guidry from the Lafayette/Carencro area.  Over the years David has played with several Cajun bands including BELTON RICHARD & THE MUSICAL ACES, WALTER MOUTON & THE SCOTT PLAYBOYS and SHERYL CORMIER & CAJUN SOUNDS.  David plays both bass and guitar and is a vocalist.

On Drums will be Jimmy Breaux – a versatile performers better known for playing the accordion.  As an accordionist, Jimmy played over 21 years with the highly acclaimed Cajun band BEAUSOLEIL featuring Michael Doucet.  They brought Cajun music to the world and even once to the White House where they played for President Bill Clinton.  As a member of BEAUSOLEIL, Jimmy and his fellow musicians were nominated 10 times for a Grammy Award and won twice.  Jimmy retired from BEAUSOLEIL in 2010.  Jimmy currently plays with the JIMMY BREAUX TRIO.  Jimmy’s Cajun music roots go way back – his great-grandfather Auguste Breaux was a well-respected accordion player in his day.  Jimmy’s grandfather Amédé Breaux formed the Cajun band BREAUX FRÈRES (BREAUX BROTHERS) nearly a century ago.  Amédé made the first recording in 1929 of “Jolie Blon”, a very popular Cajun waltz today and often called the Cajun national anthem.  Jimmy’s father Preston Breaux and brother Pat Breaux also played Cajun music.  His great-aunt Cleoma Breaux Falcon was a superb Cajun guitarist and was one of the very few women in her day to perform live. In 1928 Cleoma Breaux and her future husband Joe Falcon recorded for Columbia Records “Allons à Lafayette” – the first Cajun song to be recorded.  Jimmy Breaux has Guidry roots through his mother.

An interesting tidbit – in Louisiana there are more folks with the Hebert surname than any other Cajun last name.  In 2020 there were 20.057 Hebert families in Louisiana.  Guidry’s ranked fifth with 14,726 families in Louisiana.
