Nicole Gilhuis' presentation to the Nova Scotia Archeology Society yesterday (23 May 2023) was recorded and will be available on YouTube.com shortly.  The presentation was entitled "Atlantic Ghosts:  Daily Practice & the Rise and Fall of Colonial Revenants, 1600-1763".  In the presentation Nicole uses the Guédry family at Merliguèche and the Mi'kmaq of the same area and shows that they interacted in positive ways throughout their lives - intermarrying, food gathering, cultural celebrations, etc.  When searching YouTube.com, put Nova Scotia Archeology Society NSAS in the Search box and click on Nova Scotia Archeology Society NSAS when it comes up.

The presentation was excellent with new insights into the Acadian Guédry and Mi'kmaq relationships.  It lasts a little less than one hour.

I want to clarify a couple of remarks that I made near the end in reference to a couple of Chat questions asked.  One question asked about Charles Guédry and his wife Morningstar.  I had to keep my response very brief and just mentioned that there is no primary documentation found to date that indicates Charles was ever married or ever had children.  And that we have never identified anyone in Acadia with the name Morningstar.  To the best of my knowledge, these statements are correct.

The questioner indicated that Charles had two children:  Claude (b. 1714) and Jacques (b. 1724).  Both of these children would be grandchildren of Claude Guédry and Marguerite Petitpas.  I believe Bona Arsenault is the only genealogist that has postulated that Charles has two children - Claude and Jacques.  Bona also stated that the spouse of Charles was not known.  Known primary sources last record Charles Guédry at LaHève, Acadia in 1708 as a single man with no children and 21 years of age.

One should note that Bona Arsenault did his genealogical research in the 1950s and 1960s - long before the advent of the internet and online records.  He had to visit courthouses and churches throughout eastern Canada to gather information.  Bona then tried to build Acadian family groups.  He often had to make educated "guesses" as to where certain individuals fit into a family.  Often he was correct.  Sometimes he was not based on later information that has been discovered.  At the time his work was quite valuable to genealogists and still remains a good source if one remembers its shortcomings.

Recent research has shown that Claude was not the son of Charles, but was the son of Augustin Guédry (the brother of Charles)  and Jeanne Hébert.  There are many descendants of Claude Guédry (the grandson of Claude Guédry and Marguerite Petitpas) and his two wives (Anne Lejeune and Anne Moise) in south Louisiana and elsewhere.  [See "Generations", Volume 16 No. 1, Spring 2018, p. 6 available for free at this website:

Although not determined positively, it appears that Jacques was the son of Paul Guédry and Anne-Marie Mius d'Azy.  (See same reference as above).

Another Chat comment indicated that Claude Guédry, husband of Marguerite Petitpas, was from LaRochelle, France.  Another comment indicated he was from another location in France.  The only information that we know about Claude before he arrived in Acadia was that he was born ca. 1648-1651 and his name was Claude Guédry.  In France in the 1600s Claude was a very common first name.  With this scant information it is near impossible to say with any certainty where Claude Guédry was born or lived.  We believe his home was in France.  It may have been on the western edge of France in the Arpenans area in Haute-Saône Department where we find Gedry Mountain and some Guédry's still living in the area, but this is pure speculation at this time.  Until we can uncover a document in Acadia or France giving more specific information on Claude, we will not know his French origins with any certainty.   Several years ago the late Bernard Geddry mentioned to me that a person had told him of a document at LaRochelle that had on it Claude Guédry born in 1648.  That document, if it existed, has disappeared at this time.  It still would not prove Claude's origins, but would be interesting.

I hope those that missed Nicole's excellent presentation can view it shortly on YouTube.com and enjoy it.
