Subject: "Generations" - Summer 2023 Issue

[If you receive two emails from me with "Generations", it is because several folks indicated that they could not document the "Generations" attachment in the first email.  I am switching from Safari to Google Chrome as it appears to work properly.]

Bonjour Cousins,

Attached is our Summer 2023 issue of "Generations" - the newsletter of the Guédry and Petitpas families.  With summer winding now and fall activities starting, we hope you enjoy this issue of "Generations".

In 2003 Queen Elizabeth II signed the Petition and set July 28th as "A Day of Commemoration of the Grand Dérangement".  It was on 28 July 1755 when Lt Gov Charles Lawrence signed the Order to deport the Acadians from all of Nova Scotia.   As we reflect on the turbulent and difficult times that our ancestors endured and their resilience and strength to not let their Acadian culture and nation die, we search for visible signs of their lives still existing.  In this issue David Broussard brings us one such structure - the Old Saint Gabriel Catholic Church in St. Gabriel, Louisiana.  Acadians deported from Grand-Pré to the Baltimore, Maryland area in 1755, eventually came to Louisiana in 1767 and were forced to settle near Fort St. Gabriel on the Mississippi River.  Here they built a church and presbytère.  The Saint Gabriel Catholic Church was completed in July 1776 and still stands today.  Read about its fascinating construction, architecture and existence.

During the history of our nations, young men and women have volunteered and been drafted to serve their countries and preserve our freedoms.  Here we pay tribute to those members of the Guédry and Petitpas families who gave their lives while serving during World War I and World War II.  Take a moment to read each of their brief narratives and reflect on their sacrifices for each of us.

Look for an Update to the article on "The Death of Oswald" from our last issue.  New information emerged shortly after we published the article.

And don't forget to begin your plans for our upcoming Guédry and Petitpas Reunion on 16-17 August 2024 at St. Alphonse, Nova Scotia - on the shores of Baie Sainte-Marie.  St. Alphonse was founded in 1787 by Augustin Guédry and Marie Jeanson.

Enjoy the rest of your summer,

Marty

Gayle, I talked with Father Vidrine and he said there is only one boat procession and it is from Franklin.   Looks like you are correct.
