You have a 16 pt. hand with 6 of your major. You open the major and
partner makes a 2/1 bid. What is your rebid?
Do you bid 2 just showing 6 of the suit or 3 showing extra values?
The book I'm reading recommends bidding 2 of the suit. How do we play?
Different answers are fine, I just need to know.
I missed a slam this past week because the bidding when 1H - 2D - 2H -
3N. My partner thought I had a minimal opener and with his jump to 3NT,
I thought he had a minimal opener because I assumed fast arrival meant a
minimum. We both had 16ish pt. hands.

Thanks,

Peter

With 2/1 game force (and in general) we play fast arrival implies the minimum.  If he wanted to explore more, he should have bid 2NT or a suit.  This is a problem we've talked about, because neither partner can easily find the correct landing spot.

Reading this random site, they suggest that opener does jump to show his point range.  It's responder who's in the driver's seat and uses fast-arrival bids.  I like his suggestions.
This is cut and paste of opener rebids (I find the 2NT response interesting and kind of like it):

After 1H by you – 2D by partner, here are the meanings for your second bid:

  • Rebid of your major (2H) = Minimum (12-14 pts.).  This may be only 5-card suit if your hand is unsuitable for 2NT (weakness in an unbid suit) or a new-suit rebid.

  • 2S = Extra values (15+ pts.) and a 4-card suit.

  • 2NT = Balanced minimum (12-14 pts.) with stoppers in unbid suits OR 18+ balanced.

  • Non-jump bid of 3 of a new suit (3C) = Extra values (15+ pts.) and a 4+-card suit.

  • Raise of partner’s suit (3D) = Extra values (16+ playing points) with support (4+ cards).

  • 3 of your major (3H) = Extra values (14-15+ pts.) and a strong 6+-card suit.

  • 3NT = Extra values (15-17 pts.) with balanced distribution.

  • Jump in a new suit (3S or 4C) = Extra values, good support and a singleton in the suit bid (splinter).

  • Jump to game in your major (4H) = Minimum (11-13 pts.) with a long, solid suit.

  • 4NT = Keycard Blackwood for partner's suit.
