Whichis the best emulator that i can use? Demul? And where I can find a good guide in order to correctly confiugure it? I would like to play games like Rumble Fish 1 & 2 and they are available only on atomiswave...
The Reicast core in RetroArch also plays Atomiswave and Naomi games extremely well too. I prefer to use RetroArch over all other emulators for ease of use and complete customization. Plus Demul as far as I know hasn't been updated in years and Reicast has been updated pretty regular as of late. But again, whatever you want is fine.
I know Retroach, i tried to use it but i prefer to configure every emulator separately, i don't like Retroach interface and functions...i always have a lot of little issues... I prefer to config every emulator because in this way i'm sure that once i have create my favourite settings, everything will be continue to work (in that emulator) correctly :)
I have moved Atomiswave entirely into Retroarch. Im working through Naomi titles but some seem to work only In Demul. AFAIK Demul hasnt been updated in years but if updates are available a headsup would be appreciated!
Thanks! I tried these, but on my end they all look like they're working. Are you using an older version of MAME? The Heist was fixed in MAME 0.227 (it's one of those games that is sensitive to RAM contents at power up, aka poorly programmed). As for the rest, maybe there was a change to the sound chip code that got them working at some point?
Yeah, it looks like there's no emulation of the expansion module interface the SGM connects to. I guess that makes sense, since it was originally only used for the 2600 and Adam expansion modules. Still, maybe a subset of the functionality could be added to support the SGM.
Despite the Expansion Module #2 name the driving controller only used a regular joystick port though. The Expansion Module Interface on the other hand is the 60-pin expansion connector. At least that's what's written on the cover door
MAME is the worst offender on that front. I spend some time each winter upgrading all my emulators if they had new releases, usually don't have issues. But many times I'll skip doing Mame because I just don't want to deal with it
Simply was wondering what you guys recommend in terms of best Colecovision emulator. To be honest, I highly prefer using RetroArch or MESS when it comes to all consoles. I'd rather learn two software programs than 100 seperate emulators. That's just me, so if a standalone emulator is the best or only option, then I'd appreciate your recommendation, but these two emulators are my preference FYI.
I've seen that the BlueMSX core in RetroArch has ColecoVision compatibility. I know that BlueMSX is a cycle accurate emulator for the MSX, but can't find any compatibility reports on ColecoVision games. Is this the core you guys recommend for ColecoVision? Also, I saw Bizhawk (I think that's what is called) is similar to RA and has a Colecovision core.
I would go with either MESS or ColEm, and probably MESS. You can follow one of our MESS tutorials, follow the links to find the info for the ColecoVision like I did in the videos, and plug the ColecoVision info in instead and be up and running.
I use MAME now as I had issues with ColEm and how it handled full screen and the fact there was no way to call up the number interface which was a hassle on my tablets. I've been hearing good things about BizHawk but have never used it personally. I have never been able to get Coleco to run in RA under the BlueMSX core myself don't know what the deal is with that.
I'd go with MAME/MESS too, but you can also use blueMSXv282full (the standalone emulator, not the RA core one) to emulate the ColecoVision if you want to experiment with something else.
As well as being able to emulate a variety of MSX, MSX2, MSX2+ and MSXturboR machines, blueMSX can also emulate some non-MSX machines.
If you want blueMSX to automatically launch games for more than one system then, once you've assigned blueMSX to be the emulator to use with those Platforms, just add the Platforms and their required parameters to the Associated Platforms section of the blueMSX Edit Emulator window in LaunchBox.
If some of your games are zipped then enable the "Extract ROM archives before running" tick-box.
When you launch a game blueMSX will then automatically select the machine to emulate and launch the game.
Not sure if its ok to revive an old topic, but didnt want to start a new thread on an old topic. I saw you mentioned you had a mess tutorial. Where can i find that so i can figure out mess also. (because im trying to get colecovision to work as well but no luck with retroarch or bluemsx).
Just be careful because some CV emus have terrible sound emulation. ColEm was supposed to be good but the sound is way off, it is too high pitched and just doesn't sound right. Space Panic is a good test game. Look at a video on youtube of it on a real system then compare emulators. I think Blue MSX had the most accurate sound from what i remember (still not perfect but close). I haven't tried the multy emus like MAME or RA.
RA uses other open source emulators for its cores so yeah while it can be considered a "multi emulator" it's not really one, not like Mednafen or Mame where each emulated system is built by the same devs and uses its own code.
Hello,
First time I'm attempting to mess with mac emulators and I'm particularly interested on the m68k ones. Please correct me if I'm wrong but it seems that 68k Mac emulation is kind of stuck in time.
As far as I know my options are Basilisk II or Mini vMac. I also saw some youtube videos of people playing older 68k games using QEMU, and it seems that it also supports 68k emulation.
So, what do you guys recommend for playing the following games (I use windows btw)?
Hi, it depends.. General speaking, a Power Mac with OS 9.x, a supported graphics card and a Motorola 68040 FPU emulator gives good results. Esp. in 640x480 resolution.
However, 32-Bit QuickDraw might be an issue with certain titles.
A (very! expensive) macintosh II would be a very nice fit for 68K retro-gaming.
I bought an LC and put a IIe card in it...and have begun to test this thing against various software... -k
I really like OS6 because there is no multifinder and so the background is greyed out when playing the real old b&w stuff.
I have the impression that 68k emulation was held back for a long time due to the lack of open-source BIOS and OS alternatives. But it doesn't seem like anyone particularly cares about the distribution of those components anymore.
I think the OS X builds of Sheepshaver might be more up to date than the Windows versions, but I haven't been keeping track of that very closely. I don't think the difference is enough to warrant going out and getting a current Mac for that reason alone.
Speaking of Mini vMac.. I'm currently experimenting with vMac on Win 3.1 in another thread.
It seems that at least for vMac, System 5 is the most stable version or version with the least requirements. Maybe this information can be useful for troubleshooting one day, not sure. ?
Thanks everyone,
I tried some emulators myself, here are the results:
Basilisk II:
-Prince of Persia 1 - Runs full speed with music and sound
-Prince of Persia 2 - Runs full speed, but music is slow
-Blackthorne - Does not run (error 1415)
-Warcraft - Couldn't try since I was too lazy to make CD-ROM work
-Marathon - Runs surprisingly well, but mouse twitches a lot (may be the KVM switch I use)
It runs pretty well in general, but it was kind of a pain to set up.
Executor (not exactly an emulator but I had to try it):
-Prince of Persia 1 - Runs full speed and with sound
The other games didn't work...Blackthorne hangs up while loading and the other games crash to DOS
Tried running on an retro computer with MS-DOS, it's the easiest one to setup since you don't need any Mac OS installation and ROM.
Fusion PC:
This is an old emulator from around 2000, and it also runs in pure DOS. It was a pain to setup... I used Dosbox to install the OS and copy the games, then copied the image to my retro machine. But it was worth it I guess:
-Prince of Persia 1 - Runs full speed and with sound
-Prince of Persia 2- Runs full speed and almost with functional music (it's a bit slow at some points, but still a little better than on Basilisk II)
-Blackthorne - Does not work, same error 14 I get from Basilisk II
-Warcraft - Runs full speed, but CD audio is not working
-Marathon - Runs fine, mouse also works better still sucks
So far this is my favorite 68K mac emulator simply because I can run it under pure DOS. Since DOS is a single task OS, it feels much more like I'm using a "real" Mac OS
