He was a Vaishnavite.He wrote the first major Prabandha, a form of fictional poetry in Telugu, and for this reason, he is revered as "Andhra Kavithaa Pithaamahudu" (literally "the father of telugu poetry"). It is believed that he was also a minister in the king's court and is hence sometimes referred as "Peddanaamaatya" (Etymology: Peddana + Amaatya = Peddana, the minister). He is noted for brilliance and wit and for mocking other poets and great personalities. He created a celebrated character called Nigama Sarma akka (sister of Nigama Sarma) and a story around her without giving her a name. He also had written many Chatuvu (extempore poems).

Poets who were pained to receive bad treatment from their kings and some others who could not adjust to the hard ways of the world and immoral behaviour of certain people around them, started giving vent to their ire in the form of poems that depicted blame and hatred on whatever they disliked.
