just curious, and i've never cooked onion rings so don't claim to know much, but what isn't vegan about onion rings? assuming you're using a vegetable oil or something similar and that the oil hasn't had meat etc in it?

i was just wondering! :)

Well the problem is that I haven’t bothered making them from scratch… when I have looked at ingredients of oven-ready ones they have contain eggs and-or milk I cant remember… all the ones that I had looked into were not vegan. Now that I look it up again it looks like BK onion rings might be ok…

And for everyone’s reference, M&M Meat Shop said ingredients are:

Onions, water, enriched bleached wheat flour (niacin, reduced iron, thiamine mononitrate, riboflavin, folic acid), yellow corn flour, salt, sugar, defatted soya flour, leavening (monocalcium phosphate, sodium bicarbonate), dextrose, spice extractive, polysorbate 60, blanched in vegetable oil (soybean and/or canola) containing dimethylpolysiloxane (antifoam agent).

The allergens present in the Battered Onion Rings are gluten and soy, due to the presence of wheat and soy flours.  There are no milk or egg ingredients present in this recipe.

According to PETA's list of hidden animal ingredients, the
Polysorbates are all animal origin... :(

On a happier note, the Harvey's onion rings are definitely vegan (I
had them show me the ingredient list from the actual packaging
recently at one of the restaurants).

http://www.google.ca/search?q=polysorbate+60+vegan seems to indicate it can be vegan... Such as being an ingredient in a alt creamer from vegan essentials...

I just found this...
http://www.veg.ca/content/view/67/107/

Best overall bet is Burger King. Their BK Veggie is vegan in Canada but contains egg whites in the U.S. (btw it is not so much a burger but a vegetable patty -v) Fries and onion rings are vegan but at least the onion rings may be cooked in the same oil as meat.

In Canada, both Lick's and Harvey's offer popular vegan veggie burgers. A&W offers a veggie burger that contains butter.

The Harvey's veggie burgers are awesome - but they changed the bun and
now it's not vegan - BUT, the hot dog bun is vegan, so I just get them
to cut the burger in half and put it on a hot dog bun. At the Innes
Road location near Costco, I've never had any problems with that, and
I think they are actually getting to know me now because of this! :)

I got the following email from someone... anyone know what store might carry
this??? Is "Compliments" a Loeb brand?

"I just found some vegan onion rings and remembered you were looking for
some. They're called "Steak Cut Onion Rings" made by Compliments, found in
the frozen section, 907g bag. Totally vegan. Maybe your local grocery has
them."
