Hi all,
Here's how things went at yesterday's singing at Bells Corners United Church:
We had a nice lesson-type singing session yesterday with lots of newer singers, going through songs part by part to learn them. 10 singers sang around 16 songs from the 1991 edition! I hear minutes might be available on
the Facebook group soon... Thanks to Chris who brought delicious pumpkin chocolate chip cake!
We also held a short meeting to go over the survey answers I received. See a
summary of the answers here or let me know if you want the breakdown by email.
Next steps and help needed!
What we understood from the survey is that
-
More people would be able to participate if the sessions were in a
more central location accessible by public transit and with parking available.
-
The current location is not a dealbreaker.
-
There is enthusiasm for more opportunities to learn and to sing.
-
Sunday afternoons are the best time for most people, followed by Sunday evenings.
We also decided to put some effort into recruiting new singers through
-
creating a flyer to distribute in music schools, places of worship and more locations
-
adding content to the Facebook group (video clips of us singing, for example)
-
occasional demonstrations of shape note singing.
We've committed to:
-
Steph, Owen and Anabel will design a flyer
-
Steph will send out a description of what is needed from a venue to host our regular (monthly or biweekly) so you can help with contacting potential venues.
We need help: Do you have time to call or email a few venues? We need one or many lovely people to do that by next month, if possible. Thank you!
Next singing: We will sing again on Sunday, November 15, from 2-4:30 pm, at the Bells Corners United Church. I've created a Facebook event and a little visual to share with folks outside of this group:

PS. If you want more singing, join us in Wakefield every Tuesday evening from 6:30 to 8:00 PM at 45, Wakefield-Heights Rd. (Fairbairn Heritage House). We sing in the house! If you can get to Hull for 5:45 PM, I can offer you a lift to and from, just email me.
Thanks and take care!
