Last weekend, I put the NSX away for the winter.

I filled up the tank and added Sta-bil. Instead of idling for 20 minutes, I decided to take it for a 30-minute ride on beautiful Chemin Duplessis in Mont-Tremblant (car is stored at our place there for this Winter)

Didn’t drive it hard but had the revs up. As I brought the car into the garage, the yellow Malfunction Indicator Lamp came on.

Checking the manual, it states that it could be that the cap is loose. Although I am fairly certain that I tightened it, I filled the car the previous day before washing, adding Sta-bil and driving all on the following day.

Questions:

  1. Does it take 10+ km before the lamp comes on if the cap isn’t tightened properly?
  2. Any other suggestions on what might be the issue?
  3. Final question: It is yellow and I will want to bring it back to Ottawa in the Spring for someone to look at it. What are your thoughts on a 2-hour drive with the light on?

Tony

You can pull the codes and see what the issue is.  On my 1991 you can short two pins, somewhere, and a flashing light indicates the codes.  I've done this but probably 20 years ago.  Your car should have OBD-II and any garage can pull the codes.

Tony,

1. It can take time for a CEL to appear and take time to go way too (the computer is both confirming a problem exists and simultaneously seeing if the problem has gone away...it wants to be sure before throwing a code).

2. You loosened the cap, "tightened it" and then got a "cap not tight enough" check engine light. I'm sure that's the problem.

3. You could drive with the cap off and have no issues. You're good, it's just an evaporative emissions issue.

Just tighten the cap the next time you see the car, and the code should clear itself.

Nothing to worry about.

Cheers,

Lucas

Thank you to all for replying.

I am not sure if you’ve had any cruises without me but I would like to get a trip up to Mont-Tremblant with everyone booked for June/July next year.

Perhaps start with a coffee-meet here in Ottawa and plan from there.

Tony, do you know what ECU you’re running with the Comptech SC?  I have a similar setup (identical supercharger but branded as SOS after Comptech went out of business) and it’s controlled by a AEM ecu piggybacked to the oem unit. When it’s cold out I’ll get a check engine light like you and the car will run rich with a lot of smoke but once it warms up it clears up.  I have a obd2 scanner and the codes show o2 sensor error.  I’ll clear the code and when I run the car later, esp on a nicer day everything is back to normal.

My advice is to store that baby, wait until spring and fire her up and see if anything shows on the dash. Chances are you’re fine.  Even if your get a CEL I’m pretty sure you’re safe to drive it home from Tremblant.
