Hello All

2012 marks year 5 of the Ottawa IT Camp – yes, it goes by fast.  Our first year had a huge turn-out, but as years go by, the turn-out has gone down.  To that end, I would like to get a survey up and running before Christmas asking people what they would like to see at IT Camp this year.

The past few years, the camp is slanted to 200-300 level courses – that may be the issue with attendance(?).

Before I create this survey, I need your input to make this survey understandable.  Please review and send back to me by Tuesday, Dec 13, 2011.

Thanks…Charlie

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The first question is the primary objective for coming to IT Camp. Choose one:

-          Learn new topics

-          Advance current knowledge

-          Network with Ottawa IT people

-          Spend a day with friends

The survey will ask participants what level of complexity they want for each topic: (using the DevTeach levels)

-          Introductory

-          More Difficult

-          Most Difficult

Each survey participant can select up to five (5) topics, since that is the maximum that they can attend. (Each topic will have a checkbox before it and 2 radio buttons after it for level of complexity). People can choose any five topics.

Dev choices include:

-          Windows Phone

-          Silverlight

-          Dynamic Languages (DLR)

-          Telerik AJAX.NET Controls

-          Building Silverlight with LightSwitch

-          SharePoint Development

-          LINQ

-          Agile Practices

-          WebMatrix

-          HTML 5

-          Windows Azure

-          ASP.NET Security

-          Mocking

-          Profiling and Load Testing

-          Design by Contract

-          Aspect Oriented Programming

-          REST and oData

-          To Cloud or Not to Cloud

-          Top 5 best ways to improve your code

-          Consumerization of IT: Windows-Based Devices in the Workplace

-          Windows Phone 7.5: An Overview and Architecture Deep Dive

Database choices include:

-          SQL Server 2010: what’s new?

-          Implement data validation strategies with SSIS

-          SSIS Denali

-          SQL Performance Bottlenecks

-          XML in SQL Server

-          End to End Microsoft Business Intelligence

-          Enabling SQL Server High-Availability with Database Mirroring

-          Entity Framework

OWSUG choices include:

-          System Configuration Center Management  – what’s new?

-          Secure your wireless network

-          Testing with VS 2010

-          Hyper-V storage on Windows Server 2008 R2

-          Getting Started with System Center Virtual Machine Manager 2010

-          Overview of Microsoft System Center Orchestrator 2012

-          Building Your Own Private Cloud Infrastructure

I would suggest adding to the dev choices: "Developer Fundamentals (Patterns, practices, design, and architecture)"

Otherwise, looks like a good survey.

Phone twice? … and what is wrong with that?

I would extend the choices to six and add break it into two groups – primary and secondary choices.

Once we have an actual date we should blast as many possible channels with the information. I tend to belief that we have not spread the word far enough and soon enough.

So, the other thing we should collect is what channels should the information on the IT Camp be announced.

I would add to the Dev choices

-Refactoring, to change or not to change (and how)

-Unit Testing, did I get that right?

-MVC the new asp.net

-VS tips’n’tricks, get more out of your tools!

-Will it Blend? Make your XAML Blendable

-Data Binding the XAML way

-EF isn’t THAT hard!

I would add an "Other" label and textbox in case we missed a topic. I
would also I add a" Comments" or "Suggestions" textbox at the end of
the survey to give attendees the opportunity to gives us feedback

I thought we were going to survey general categories?  Those seem like specific sessions.  The sessions don't sound bad; but who's going to actually present them?  The most we can really expect from speakers to to propose sessions they want to do for a given topic or track.  A survey with those listed on them will make people expect those sessions will definitely be at the code camp--leading to potentially disappointment and complaints.

You first three sessions I would fit in a developer fundamentals track--possibly the fourth I'd include in there.  The XAML obviously would fit XAML-focused track and the EF session would seem to fit in one of that data tracks...  So, I think we have all that covered so far in what has been proposed for the survey.

Cheers -- Peter
